Men are Stronger Than Porn

With headlines screaming of a golf great’s links to porn stars and others who make a living off male fantasies, it’s a good time to talk about pornography and its consequences. The following words are mainly for men, but women (especially wives) may want to listen in.

Let’s be clear from the start. Porn destroys love, breaks up marriages, exploits women and hurts children. Yet it has respected defenders in the media and in government. Indeed, these are boom times for pornography, thanks to the Internet, which flashes suggestive images with virtually every click.

Men are especially susceptible to these images – accessing such sites four to five times more often than women – because they respond physically to sexual stimuli, whether these are found in a flesh and blood woman or a mega-pixel computer image. As countless low-budget porn flicks have shown, men don’t necessarily look for great art when they seek stimulation.

When I say men, I mean married and single men, young and old men, religious or atheist men, but most of all men in their 30s and 40s, who are the largest viewers of porn. Still, all men are attracted by racy images, and few manage to break free from lust and claim consistent “custody of the eyes” or purity of thought.

The billion-dollar porn industry knows these facts and acts accordingly. It’s time we men acted accordingly as well. Let’s put porn in its place – in the spam or trash folder, or through the paper shredder.

The Fathers for Good website, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, has a section called “Men Are Stronger than Porn.” The name was carefully chosen. As Catholics, we learn that Original Sin leaves a wound of concupiscence even after Baptism. So we know we are weak men ...

"Yet as Catholics, we also know of the strength and grace that come from Christ through the Word of God and the sacraments. We know his sufferings in the flesh and his death that broke the power of sin in our lives. We live in the time of his resurrection and glory, the age of the Holy Spirit."

Amen!

No, adultery does.

Amen.

And what does this tell kids? The mainstreaming of porn teaches kids and others that this is acceptable.

Slutting around is acceptable. That is what our culture is teaching our kids.

Thank you for this topic. Porn is an addiction. As a neurobiologist, I know that.

Healthy sexuality activates certain brain areas. Porn addiction activates others. Namely those that are engaged in all addictions, be these alcoholism, cocain, heroin, nicotine, et cetera.

Characteristics of any addiction: it isolates, estranges, costs money, is bad for your health, induces lying, destroys families, traumatizes wives and children.

Just say no.

Of course.

Doesn’t change the fact that the quoted line is describing adultery.

Part of the problem is self discipline, in today’s society we have been sold to since birth on the premise that if we want something we should have it. Porn sells one of the most powerful of human emotions desire, telling the viewer this is what you want and this is what you need. How few woman can compare to the image of a beautiful willing sex slave who wants sex in every position 24/7. Men look at their aging wives and sometimes the real tired working mom with aches and pains just doesn’t seem the same. How does a flesh and blood woman compete with fantasy. Most women oddly do not want anything inserted up their posterior while they are trying to go to bed after a long day. The porn when it acts to sell a man on the thought that there is something more then reality waiting out there, does break up marriages.

As Catholics, we learn that Original Sin leaves a wound of concupiscence even after Baptism.

So does this mean that baptism does not remove the original sin?

More like cocaine. Guns are fun, not addictive.

I wonder why God made us so that porn is attractive?

"So does this mean that baptism does not remove the original sin?"

Absolutely not.

But that tug everyone feels, more or less, toward evil remains.

The Porn industry thrives on it.

Which is Porn. If you are a follower of Christ, you know that what is in your heart is sin, and the act is sin. The physical act manifests itself from the inner thought. Only Christ can overcome it.

One could say the same about sex.

” wonder why God made us so that porn is attractive?”

Most all sin is some normal healthy desire pushed to an extreme.

Sex is healthy and normal and any man who doesn’t like to look at a pretty woman is a queer. Where is becomes a problem is where the “look” becomes a leer.

“How does a flesh and blood woman compete with fantasy[?]”

Compete for what - the affections of an immature, selfish brat who thinks it SHOULD be the way he sees it in a peep show? I would pass on that in a heartbeat.

Indeed.
