I was recently delighted to learn that Ave Maria University was the recipient of a Four Million dollar ($4,000,000.) gift from a man named Tom Golisano. The first words which came into my heart upon reading the news were from St. Paul, Rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15)
I am convinced that the most important work being done in this new missionary age is the preparation of the next generation of faithful, well educated young Catholic men and women, prepared to respond to the call to every Christian vocation and to participate in the mission of the Church. It is these men and women, now being prepared at places like Ave Maria, who will carry on the work of the Church well into the Third Millennium making it into a new missionary age of the Church.
Our work as Catholics called to rebuild the Church and transform the culture will take a long time given the devastation of the last one hundred years. We need living stones, young women and men in love with the Lord and the Church and truly educated in the Truth which alone sets us free to take up the charge. They will carry on the New Evangelization through their work and their witness of life. Ave Maria is one of several dynamically faithful Catholic Colleges preparing future Catholic leaders. I have great respect for the courage shown by the University founder, the leadership of its President and the scholarship and dedication of those who are gathering together to build this new University dedicated to Our Lady....

how is that town and school doing?
>>In August 2008, Golisano contributed $1 million to the Democratic National Convention.[6]<<
Thomas Golisano is, I believe, a billionaire.
While he may support the Democratic party, the man does an awful lot of good works here in upstate NY. He had a special wing built onto a local hospital to help children with cancer and he sponsers all kinds of good charitiable organizations.
He’s ok in my book, differant politicial ideology or not.
It’s blood money.
Ave Maria would be smart to turn it down.
How so?
>> Its blood money.
How so? <<
Giving a million dollars to the dems in 2008 promotes their agenda. Including embryonic stem cell research, abortion, birth control and euthanasia. Not 2000 and a change of heart. 2008. This man helped get Obama elected.
Do you think his money is clean? I don’t. Is trading one’s Catholic responsibility for an athletic center, such a good thing?
Not in my opinion. I wouldn’t trade my soul for thirty pieces of silver.
But it does let me know one thing. My kids will never set foot in Ave Maria University. We looked at it, but it is now off the list.
And I will be passing the word around to my Catholic homeschool groups and everyone in my parish. Being in MI, many parents have considered Ave Maria, even with the move to FL.
I will suggest they prayerfully consider otherwise.
If Ave Maria will take from a benefactor of the Dems now, what will they do later?
“Blood Money” usually implies ill-gotten gains.
This appears to be a case of clean money going to both good and bad causes.
Thomas Golisano is, I believe, a billionaire.
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
Blase Thomas Golisano (born 1942) is an American billionaire businessman and philanthropist. He is the founder of Paychex, the second-largest payroll processor in the United States and co-owner (along with real estate developer Larry Quinn) of the Buffalo Sabres hockey team and of the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team. He is a founding member of the Independence Party of New York. He ran for governor of New York in 1994, 1998 and 2002 as the candidate of the Independence Party. Although he lost each time, he increased his percentage of the vote. He spent a combined $93 million on the three campaigns.[1] In 2002, Golisano challenged New York Governor George Pataki as the candidate of the Independence Party. By receiving more than 50,000 votes each time, Golisano brought the Independence Party an automatic ballot line for the succeeding four years.
I don't know where he stands on specific, individual issues,
but he gets high marks in my book for going Third Party (along with Ross Perot!)
Money that goes to the Dems goes for a reason. And goodies come back. Without a doubt.
It’s your right to rationalize it. I can’t.
And Ave Maria can do what they will, but I have no need to support them. I will tell the facts and let others decide as well.
In 2002 he went third party.
In 2008 he gave a million to the Dems.
His marks are on the “D” side.
