Holy work: Erie's bishop speaks his mind on Catholic Church issues (Trautman)
Erie Times News ^ | 11/15/2009 | Dana Massing

Erie Catholic Bishop Donald W. Trautman enunciated each word he spoke about the blood of Christ.

"It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven," the bishop said, his voice carrying to the back of Gate of Heaven Cemetery's chapel, where he was celebrating a Mass on Nov. 2.

By the time the annual service for All Souls' Day comes around in 2010, Trautman will likely be saying some different words.

"For all" is due to be replaced with "for many" in a New English translation of the Roman Missal. U.S. Catholic bishops will vote on the final section of it at their fall meeting, which begins Monday.

Trautman has been a vocal critic of some of the changes.

But speaking out is nothing new for the man who will celebrate his 20th anniversary as Erie's Catholic bishop in 2010.

"I have taken controversial stances when it was necessary," Trautman said.

He took Mercyhurst College to task for inviting Hillary Rodham Clinton to speak at its main campus during the 2008 presidential race, saying the Catholic school shouldn't give a platform to someone in favor of abortion rights.

This year, he had similar reasons for decrying the University of Notre Dame's decision to give President Barack Obama an honorary degree when he spoke at commencement.

But long before Trautman was a bishop who worried about candidates disavowing Catholic beliefs, he was a boy who just wanted to be a priest.

Trautman was born in Buffalo and said he was called to the priesthood in grade school.

"He's concerned that it uses words like "ineffable" and "consubstantial" and has sentences with as many as 88 words."

Could it be that maybe you're being a little condescending, or having too little faith in "Joe and Mary Catholic"?

My dear Bishop, set the standards high and those who are willing will strive to attain them.

We would do well to remember that although many of us oppose Bishop Trautman’s liturgical views, he has steadfastly prevented pro-abortion Catholics from speaking publicly in Catholic venues in his diocese for some years now.

Here is what the bishop had to say about the recent contretemps at Notre Dame:

“In a statement released this week, Trautman called Obama ‘a relentless advocate of unrestricted abortion’ and said it was a ‘bad decision’ by Notre Dame officials to give him a platform....

“Trautman, in a written statement, said, ‘the Golden Dome of Notre Dame, the long revered symbol of a Catholic university, will be disgraced and dishonored on this coming May 17, the commencement day.’...”

We must pray and support our Bishops.
Give kudos where kudos are due.

Thanks!

“pro multis” is properly translated “for many,” not “for all.” What does Trautman object to, the extra syllable? I think not.

Odd, also, that he managed to eliminate all references to “spirit” or “soul” from the liturgy. Not modern enough, I guess. “Et cum spirito tuo” is properly translated “And with thy spirit, NOT “And also with you.”

Not to speak of “Credo.”

Yes, it will pass quickly. And if trautperson keeps talking like this, Pope Benedict may give him the boot earlier.

We can pray!

He stood tall there. Would that he stood that tall on liturgical issues and abuses.

I have had the chance to meet Bishop Trautman many times over the last couple years (as a seminarian studying at Erie for another diocese). As much as I disagree with his liturgical views, I think he genuinely believes that the translations being discussed are the best thing for the Church in the US.

He serves his diocese with a true shepherd's heart - we ought pray that he sees our needs and that his heart is moved in this as well.

Dear GCC Catholic,

This is my [woefully uninformed] impression of Bishop Trautman, as well.

I believe, too, that he is wrong on the liturgy. Yet, he seems to be sincere in his views, and they seem to be motivated by real pastoral concern, whether or not that concern might be a little disconnected from reality.

And otherwise, he seems to be an orthodox, and at times, even forthright bishop.

I'm glad that it appears that he will be on the losing end of the liturgy battles, but I don't think that he's one of the bad guys.
