Several authentic news sources tell the story: Accuracy in Media…The Christian Science Monitor…The Hill, the newspaper of Capitol Hill…NBC News…and Politico the objective Internet feed that disseminates stories on U. S. politics. Politico writes that last Saturday after Catholic lobbyists had completed a deal with Pelosi…purportedly to kill the pro-abortion provision…the USCCB “delivered a critical endorsement” to Pelosi “by signing off on late-night agreement to grant a vote on an amendment barring insurance companies that participate in the exchange from covering abortions”....

....The lobbying wasn’t just to ditch the abortion provision but was conducted with a wink and a nod that if the abortion provision were to be dumped, the Catholic bishops would give thumbs-up on Obama’s plan to encase 1/6th of the economy in a statist straitjacket…with penalties meted out for those who refuse to obey including possibly…as a last resort…being arrested if they didn’t sign up with the bill and bought private insurance....

....Not all bishops are liberal-but the good ones are so busy running their dioceses that they’ve delegated their role to the USCCB. Now we have a Chicago successor to Joe Bernardin who runs it…or has been elected to run it and for whom numberless liberals run it for him and who when they’re questioned are quick to parse-parse-parse-parse: huh? What do you mean liberal? What do you mean “Democratic”? The social teachings of the Church necessitate that…

"Show me just one Catholic bishop who will speak up against coveting your neighbors’ goods. That is why Catholics ignored the Bishops on abortion. They know abortion is wrong but overlooked the Dems on that point because those same politicians pandered to their covetousness. Same for protestants and evangelical pastors, leaders and activists. American politics and government at all levels is driven by government-mediated coveting. Until the Church takes a stand against this we can expect to sink deeper and deeper into socialism and, oh yeah, abortion."

Will The USCCB Barter the Catholic Catechism with Politicians?

They did a long time ago. Where were you?

The domestic policy staff runs the show and Cardinal George admits to being in almost daily contact with them. The domestic policy staff is a bunch of leftist democratic party apparatchiks who confuse ideology with faith, and hope and change with Hope and Salvation. This is shameful.

Other clues: The Hill newspaper reports that none other than Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) blurted this out which uncovered the USCCB’s intent: “I would like the [Catholic] bishops who as I understand it WANT A BILL, to help us work out a plan where we don’t have winners and losers. Because the losers will make us lose the bill and the winners won’t have won anything.” [Capitalization supplied].

Mrs Don-O you pinged me to a caucus thread that said this is not true. Any idea what the story is?

This whole thing is a rumor. The Bishops have made no agreement with Pelosi or anyone else.

In fact a study of unvarnished Catholic church history convinced Bob Novak to convert, saying that he now had proof the Church founded by Jesus Christ is divine since it survived a long line of willful skullduggers down through the centuries…that and at the same time produced magisterial thinkers such as Ambrose, Aquinas and Augustine.

Exactly. Lots of Peters and Judases and the occasional Paul.

There is some outright skulduggery going on here. The following is from the Get Religion blog, which did some quote-checking.

More quote malpractice

We’ve looked a bit at the coverage of Rep. Bart Stupak’s successful amendment to the House health care legislation that prohibits the use of tax dollars to fund abortions. Catholic representatives and the Catholic Conference of Bishops were key players in getting this amendment passed, certainly.

Does that mean that Catholics or, specifically, the Catholic Conference of Bishops, endorse the Democrats’ health care bill? Hardly.

And yet that’s what the Los Angeles Times claimed in a story written by reporter Kim Geiger. Here’s how the story begins:

In a last-minute compromise seeking to secure a majority vote for a healthcare overhaul, House Democratic leaders agreed Saturday to essentially exclude abortion coverage from their bill except for insurance policies paid exclusively with private money.

The amendment, offered just prior to the vote on the healthcare bill, passed 240 to 194.

The compromise won immediate support from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which urged Catholics to “lend their full-throated support” to the Democrats’ healthcare bill.

“The bishops’ stamp of approval means that this bill is unambiguously pro-life and we will vigorously oppose those who suggest otherwise,” the conference said in a statement Saturday.

Well, that’s pretty unambiguous.

Except it’s also completely untrue. The Conference of Catholic Bishops did not urge Catholics to “lend their full-throated support” to the Democrats’ healthcare bill.

And they didn’t give a stamp of approval. The “full-throated” phrase and the following comment come not from the Conference of Catholic Bishops but, rather, a press release from Catholics United. I know they both have the word “Catholic” in them, but this really shouldn’t be that confusing.

Catholics United bills itself as a “non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting the message of justice and the common good found at the heart of the Catholic Social Tradition.” Religion reporter Dan Gilgoff of U.S. News & World Report says that they “provide Roman Catholic cover for the White House and the Democrats.” They’re a progressive activist group that has been vocal in support of much of the Democratic agenda. There are similar groups that serve the same function across the aisle, of course.

But the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is just that and they have most definitely not urged Catholics to lend their full-throated support to the current version of the Democrats’ health care bill or given any stamp of approval. Here’s a sample from a recent press release:

“We remain deeply concerned about other aspects of health care reform as the debate now moves to the Senate, especially as it affects the poor and vulnerable, and those at the beginning and end of life. We will continue to insist that health care reform legislation must protect conscience rights. We support measures to make health care more affordable for low-income people and the uninsured. We remain deeply concerned that immigrants be treated fairly and not lose the health care coverage that they now have,” [Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops] said also.

It’s bad enough how reliant reporters are on press releases for their work. That they can’t even attribute the press release to the right organization is pretty sorry. And unfortunately the quote mis-attribution is spreading.

That all from Get_Religion.

But how many people read the Get Religion blog, vs. the number who read the L.A. Times? A jaw-dropping coup by the adversary, and everybody fell for it.

I hope you will help publicize what actually happened here?
