We are approaching the end of the liturgical year which will culminate with the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. At this feast we celebrate what we read in Scripture, that God will be all in all.

As we move toward this feast during this month of November, as a church we focus on the four last things: Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. The thought of death may bring discomfort to non believers who are healthy, wealthy, and wise in our own estimation. It can mean the loss of power, prestige, and possessions as they know them, separation from loved ones, dismantling of hopes and dreams. Yet for us who are believers, we know that what awaits us is even better. Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him. What we shall be has not yet come to light. We know that we shall be like God, for we shall see him as He is.

Death is the way that each man must pass to enter eternal life and happiness. Life is the time of preparation for that passage beginning with baptism, nourished with the word and Eucharist, multiplying the good works for which we were saved by God.

Every man is created by God to know, love, and serve Him in this world, and to be happy with God in heaven. We are saved from evil for good by Grace, God’s free gift of his wisdom, heart, and will, through faith, that which God has revealed in Sacred Scripture and Tradition and our response of trust in it. When we respond well, we know with the mind of God, love with the heart of God, and act according to the will of God.

We enter into the kingdom of God through being born from above by water and the Holy Spirit in Baptism. Through Confirmation, we receive the 7 fold gifts to sanctify us. By feeding on the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus, we are nourished in our souls to continue to think, love, and act like God.

At a point known to God, our bodily functions will cease to operate according to nature. This is called death.

At the moment of death, each person has an immediate judgment by God which includes an accounting of all that the person did while he was in the body, and God’s just reward for cooperation with grace or punishment for rejection of God’s grace.

Our destiny will be heaven where our souls will experience the vision of God, or it will be hell because we chose against God in our lives.

For those who died with strong affections for the material world, a final purification will be done to purge them of these affections and to make them ready to desire only God Himself. This theology of the church is called the doctrine of purgatory.

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire: As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

1472 To understand this doctrine and practice of the Church, it is necessary to understand that sin has a double consequence. Grave sin deprives us of communion with God and therefore makes us incapable of eternal life, the privation of which is called the “eternal punishment” of sin. On the other hand every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory. This purification frees one from what is called the “temporal punishment” of sin. These two punishments must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin. A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain.

1475 In the communion of saints, “a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things.” In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin.

1498 Through indulgences the faithful can obtain the remission of temporal punishment resulting from sin for themselves and also for the souls in Purgatory.

On November 1 we celebrate the Saints in Heaven, those declared so by the church over the centuries, either by acclamation of all the faithful as in the early church, or through the process of canonization now in effect in these later times. We celebrate our communion with them. Some ignorant of the fullness of the Christian faith wrongly call these “dead” saints and do not understand why we pray to them. All are alive in Christ, Jesus tells us, and these saints in heaven have power to intercede for our needs before Jesus.

On November 2 we celebrate All Souls, those who have died and whose faith is known to God alone. In particular we remember those who are being purged of their affections, helping them with our prayers, applying the indulgences we can receive toward their purgation of earthly affections and urging them on to accept God.

So in our communion of saints, we are the church militant - the church on earth, the church suffering - the souls in purgatory - and the church triumphant - the saints in heaven united with Jesus and who await our arrival to join them and the angels one day in the perfect vision of God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to hear the prayers of thy humble servants, and to forgive the sins of them that confess the same unto thee : that they may obtain of thy loving-kindness pardon and peace.
Ineffábilem nobis, Dómine, misericórdiam tuam cleménter osténde : ut simul nos et a peccátis ómnibus éxuas, et a pœnis, quas pro his merémur, erípias.	O Lord, we pray thee, shew forth upon us thy servants the abundance of thy unspeakable mercy : that we may be delivered from the chain of our sins, and from the punishment which for the same we have most righteously deserved.
Deus, qui culpa offénderis, pœniténtia placáris : preces pópuli tui supplicántis propítius réspice ; et flagélla tuæ iracúndiæ, quæ pro peccátis nostris merémur, avérte.	O God, who art wroth with them that sin against thee, and sparest them that are penitent : we beseech thee to hear the prayers of thy people that call upon thee ; that we, which have most justly deserved the scourges of thine anger, may by thy great mercy be delivered from the same.

Omnípotens sempitérne Deus, miserére fámulo tuo Pontífici nostro N., et dírige eum secúndum tuam cleméntiam in viam salútis ætérnæ : ut, te donánte, tibi plácita cúpiat, et tota virtúte perfíciat.	Almighty and everlasting God, we beseech thee to have compassion upon N., our Pope, and by thy mercy govern him in the way of everlasting life : that, being endued with thy grace, he may ever seek those things that are pleasing unto thee, and with his whole strength perform the same.
Deus, a quo sancta desidéria, recta consília et justa sunt ópera : da servis tuis illam, quam mundus dare non potest, pacem ; ut et corda nostra mandátis tuis dédita, et, hóstium subláta formídine, témpora sint, tua protectióne, tranquílla.	O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed : give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give ; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness.
Ure igne Sancti Spíritus renes nostros et cor nostrum, Dómine : ut tibi casto córpore serviámus, et mundo corde placeámus.	Grant, O Lord, we pray thee, that the fire of thy Holy Spirit may in such wise cleanse our reins and our hearts : that we serving thee in pureness both of body and soul may be found an acceptable people in thy sight.
Fidélium, Deus, ómnium cónditor et redémptor, animábus famulórum famularúmque tuárum remissiónem cunctórum tríbue peccatórum : ut indulgéntiam, quam semper optavérunt, piis supplicatiónibus consequántur.	O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all them that believe : grant unto the souls of thy servants and handmaidens the remission of all their sins ; that, as they have ever desired thy merciful pardon, so by the supplications of their brethren they may receive the same.
Actiónes nostras, quæsumus, Dómine, aspirándo prævéni et adjuvándo proséquere : ut cuncta nostra orátio et operátio a te semper incípiat et per te cœpta finiátur.	Prevent us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious favour, and further us with thy continual help : that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally by thy mercy obtain everlasting life.
