non-LDS and LDS, I didn't know there were flame wars over that, other than sneers at Romney.

Dispensationalism -- that means (roughly) God is held to restrict his types / means of interactions with people to specific forms (more or less) in different eras, e.g. "miracles" and such were to give the Early Church a leg up, but since then have become much rarer, etc. And othes say, "no, God still does miracles today." Is that close enough?

The subject is usually a fight between those who think Civil War and Kosovo threads should exist, and those who don't.

The Civil War disputes center on the reason for the war, who was the aggressor, whether Abe Lincoln was noble or not, etc. The Kosovo dispute center on who was the aggressor and often gets into Islamicism, the destruction of Christian churches, etc.

Dispensationalism expects Christ to rule a thousand years on earth before the new heaven and earth - and that the promises to Israel will be kept in reference to the descendants of Abraham, i.e. the nation of Israel. Preterists believe that those prophecies were fulfilled in the first century and that the promises that were made to Israel now apply to Christians. For a Jew to receive a promise he must become Christian.

As far as I know, there are no flame wars on the LDS threads these days. They are all in the Religion Forum where they can get heated, but few end up in the Smoky Backroom. The Romney candidacy and the FLDS situation may have resulted in some News/Activism threads being banished to the Smoky Backroom.
