From the article: Spokesman Scott Trotter says the church has a policy of not profiting from alleged ill-gotten gains.

Makes sense. But note the "other hand" of what this means, Lds church policy-wise: Simply put, the church then must also have a policy of...profiting from alleged health-gotten gains.

Wow! (I didn't know that churches were in the "profiteering" business anyway -- for any "gotten gain.")

But MUCH has been written as to how the Lds church has long been a commercial enterprise. A Mormon and non-Mormon combined to write a book, The Mormon Corporate Empire: The Eye-Opening Report on the Church and Its Political and Financial Agenda by John Heinerman and Anson Shupe (Beacon Press, 1988).

It all goes back as what tithing actually is. Tithing is between you and God, no one else - period.

$202,000 in tithing money paid by a man convicted of bilking investors out of more than $142 million.

The math doesn't work.

Wouldn't the "tithe" be $14.2 mil.?

Can't argue with the last part of the statement but "tithe" is 10%.

First fruits, 10%. It still is a matter that is between you and God.

Oh, I know. Sometimes it just irritates me when people don’t get such a simple concept. (not you)
I’ll just have a gin and tonic and get over myself.

Let’s see...

The guy got more than $142 million...

Which means he paid more than 14.2 million in tithes...

But only $202,000 is being paid back...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The Morg needs to fire their accountants and hire new ones...

What about the rest...the ah, $14 million ????

“the church has a policy of not profiting from alleged ill-gotten gains.”

Besides that extra $14 million, are they planning to give back the interest the Morg has accummulated from their many investments ???

Banks, hotels, debunked insurance companies, white elephant Malls, land grabs etc..

The math doesn't work.

No honor among thieves, notice no interest on that amount the lds church would have earned.

Oh, please. That's only a problem when Mitt Romney is running for office. Otherwise, it's just dandy (Romney was back on the Marriott BoD in two shakes after dropping out.).

It's also ok when Marriott sues rape victims for negligence when they're brutalized in front of their two small children on Marriott property, even though Marriott failed to remove the rapist from hanging around their parking garage (he staked it out for several days).

According to Marriott, it was her fault (she was negligent) when her children were threatened with rape and violence as well.

And, according to Marriott, it's a good idea to identify that rape victim to people she knows - her gym instructor and babysitter, for example, so that they can be subpoenaed to testify whether or not she wanted the rapist's attention in the first place.

Marriott only relented when the public disgust at their corporate behavior reached a crescendo. And then they blamed their lawyers, taking no responsibility.

Marriott Reverses on Blaming Rape Victim (^)

We destroyed our Marriott rewards cards and will never stay there again. We are far from alone in that regard. If this is their corporate culture, I will not contribute a dime toward it.

If that (or belatedly returning the money from that story) are examples of LDS morality in business, no thanks.

Ex-Mormon Bishop Charged in $20M Ponzi Scheme
Merriman's church donations may be tainted [Mormon Ponzi schemer's tithe monies ill-gotten?]
The Arapahoe County investor, accused of bilking dozens of investors of up to $20 million, served as a Mormon bishop for five years, making tithing payments — composing 10 percent of his income — to the church, LDS officials acknowledged Thursday. So the Utah-based church could eventually find itself paying back Merriman's donations to his victims if the funds are ultimately deemed by a court to be "ill-gotten" or fraudulent gains, said church spokeswoman Kim Farah....

....There are other ways Merriman's scheme may have steered money toward the church. He used part of his proceeds to amass hundreds of works by Renaissance artists and works by Rembrandt, displaying them in churches or church-sponsored facilities. It's possible, some LDS members say, that his exhibits lured other donations to the church merely out of appreciation....

You are assuming he actually paid 10%. But the article says it was far less:

U.S. District Court filings show Val Southwick paid The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints $202,761.74 between 2001 and 2006.

The Morg said he tithed...

The Morg counted him as a tither...

The Morg published so much tithe money for such and such year...

Either he’s a tither...$14.2 million...

Or the Morg are liars...

Gosh...I wonder which ???

Morg? I assume you mean The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as the LDS Church or the Mormons).

You have not thought this thing through. Southwick might well have claimed that the money he paid was a full tithe, i.e., a full 10% of his income. After all, he bilked people out of tens of millions of dollars—lying to the Church would not have caused him to lose sleep.

In any case, the LDS Church would have no way of knowing whether Southwick was a full tithe-payer or not. Contrary to what you may think, the Church does not require documentation of income to prove that one is paying a full 10%. (In all my years in the Church, no bishop has ever asked me to divulge my income.) The Church knows only what it receives, not how much was made (or how).

Now you realize you are attempting here to put me in the middle of your dispute with other FReepers ???

You say one thing...they say another...

You dont have any evidence on your side for your argument...

You said so just now...

“(In all my years in the Church, no bishop has ever asked me to divulge my income.)”

so you pull ME, a Christian, into a mormon conflict...

Shabby, Loghead, shabby...

In 2008, the LDS Church Corporation of the Presidency agreed to return the money as part of a Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement action.

Let's quit going on about the money; and get the details of THIS!!
