Yes, I think that was Phil Lawler’s point, and I agree.
In the course of this discussion, however, many people seem to keep coming back to the issue of Kennedy’s real or imagined repentance, and in my opinion, his private repentance (or not) is completely irrelevant to the real issue. I have been reading about this in other forums and people become obssessed with the state of Kennedy’s soul, which really isn’t of any significance in this case.
We’re talking about the effect of the Church publicly appearing to approve somebody who publicly rejected its teachings, not about whether Teddy Kennedy is frolicking in the Elysian Fields or toasting on a spit, and I was trying to state (not specifically to you, btw) that I think letting the discussion get dragged in that direction misses the point. I think that is precisely what Cdl O’Malley is trying to do, btw, drag it off into the personal and skip over the public scandal he has given.
