The notion that God no longer uses the forces of His creation as punishment, or as chastisement to provoke repentance is one of the casualties of liberal protestantism, correctly foretold by H. Richard Neibuhr in
1937 (note the date!)
"a God without wrath who brings humans without sin into a kingdom without judgment through a Christ without a cross."
Consider that as you contemplate the steeple of Central Lutheran and tremble!
