When the Vatican began an inquiry seven months ago into the "soundness" of American nuns, it adopted a discreet approach.
But as details have emerged about the investigation into the beliefs held by nuns - and of the way they worship - the disquiet and irritation felt in religious communities has started to spill into the public arena.
A working paper delivered recently by the Vatican to the leaders of American nuns was interpreted by many as a sign that the hierarchy in Rome is worried about a liberal drift among them.
The sisters are increasingly anxious about what that might mean.
Nuns once worked mainly in Roman Catholic schools and hospitals, but since the sweeping reforms of the Second Vatican Council in the late 1960s they have decided for themselves how best to do good in the world.
(snip)
But senior figures in the Vatican are concerned that as nuns respond to the changing needs of US society, some have become too liberal.
Recent guidance about the investigation - known as the "apostolic visitation" - reveals questions about whether nuns take part in daily mass, and "the soundness of doctrine held and taught" by them.
Traditionalists have long been concerned that some sisters might be flouting Church teaching on sensitive issues such as homosexuality and the ordination of women as priests.
The investigation will also ask for a description of "the process for responding to sisters who dissent publicly or privately from the authoritative teaching of the Church".

The BBC hates Christians and thinks most white people are evil. the Pope needs to clean house at Notre Dame too. The whole American Catholic Church is too liberal and sucks up to illegals.
They need to look into south American “social justice” priests and nuns while they’re at it
they suck up to illegals because many long time American Catholics have strayed from strict Catholic (and Christian)doctrine and are Easter and Christmas Catholics, while the Mexicans have by and large kept the faith.
Just my opinion from personal observation
How narrow!
Then they need to look to the Eastern Europeans, Poles and Slovaks who have been just as faithful.
The Mexicans are keeping families from my Slovak parish from getting their Long waiting, $$$$$ for greencard paying, family members from coming here.
If you were standing in line for two hours to get onto Splash Mountain and 100 people cut in front of you, you’d be pretty upset.
I love this quote....

Hello! Vow of obedience there Sister?
When I think about the fruits of Vatican II, avoiding the "interpretation" issue for a moment, well I smell rotting produce.
>> Sister Mary says the Vatican hierarchy inhabits a very different world ...
Yup, not too much secular humanism preached in Rome ...
***Do you suppose the Vatican has issues with Wiccan lesbian priestesses representing the Church?
How narrow!***
Such a shame. I had an exchange with one of my baby boomer (approximately 65 year old) friends at Church today and razzed him about the Vatican reversing the excesses of Vatican II. His indignant reply was that it did not go far enough. This couple are both very nice, pleasant and earnestly helpful people who believe that the Church needs to ordain women immediately and liberalize damn near everything that it touches. They have three kids, and will only ever have two grandchildren. The wife of their son does things like serruptitiously plant gardens on other peoples’ property and announce it to the news media if the owners don’t catch her while she’s doing it. No children will sully her womb. I’m surprised that she is not a priestess already.
Lesbian nuns? Big smoochy kisses, mwah, mwah, mwah. This generation is going to its grave seeing the reversal of the decline of American Catholicism and is somewhat (but not enough) bothered by it.
yup. Many have gone WAY off the reservation, so to say. WAY off. I know one that voted for Obama that said, “Abortion isn’t everything.” Liberal BS has taken over. Way over.
and more non Christians are coming in legally than Christians...you know, Hindu's, Buddhists and of course our ‘friends’ the Muslims.
its a lose, lose situation
Sadly I know a SSND sister who said publicly when justifying a vote for Hussein ‘I’m anti-war’. She retired in MAY 09 from the position of Pastoral Associate at our parish.

Ya think? Just a few weeks ago, a sister from some society or other gave 'witness' to the loaves and fishes and had the audacity to say that the multiplication did not truly happen. After all, Christ wasn't a "magician" (her word). The following week, our Pastor issued an apology in the bulletin to state that the multiplication was indeed real.
I wish he would have done it that day. In fact, looking back, I wish I would have stood up and called her on it during Mass.
I once worked in government in a committee that dealt with social issues. We received many letters from nuns opposing the death penalty for murderers but never received one letter opposing abortion or restrictions on abortion. I will never forget it.
