Vergine Addolorata (Pinacoteca Comunale, Cesena)
August 24, 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the birth of Sassoferrato (Giovanni Battista Salvi). The pain of the Sorrowful Mother was one of Sassoferrato's specialties: few like him knew how to blend the glorious beauty of the Ever-Virgin Mother of God, the Virgo Assumpta, and the deep and incalculable suffering of her sword-crossed Immaculate Heart.
Virgo Dolorosa, ora pro nobis!

I saw "The Virgin in Prayer" back in 2004 at the National Gallery in London. I'll never forget that moment. I had just arrived and was fatigued from the transatlantic plane ride, and as I was browsing the paintings in the museum with a good friend of mine, I happened upon it and even in my tired state, seeing it made such an impression on me. I bought a print of it in their store and I've been meaning to frame it.

I was not familiar with this artist -- it seems as though Italy had so many brilliant painters in this period that you can't possibly learn them all.

He looks more to me like a 20th century man than a 17th century one. That direct challenging look . . .

The thing I notice immediately is the glorious and perfect texture and color of the skin.

Now THIS is completely off topic - but as I was looking for artist self-portraits, I found THIS:

I had Larsson pegged as a guy with a quirky sense of humor (his paintings are affectionate, humorous, tender, and VERY Swedish) but for some reason this just cracks me up.

I think it's the steady gaze, although with a lurking twinkle, contrasted with the cross-eyed clown.
He did some beautiful paintings - they are so VERY Swedish!
