Yes.
I don’t recall when.
He doesn’t belabor it. It’s almost in passing. But I have heard him touch on it.
I have the impression that the church’s small groups deal much more and much more effectively with such issues as sin, repentance and living an overcoming life.
Frauds like Osteen, Swaggart, Schuller and Warren are no different than Sharpton, Jackson, and Rev. Wright. They are emblematic of the curse of televangelical American Protestantism.
And Timothy Chapter 2.
Being a Tennessee lady, Nana, I'm sure that you already knew of these Scriptures. Tennessee may be one of the last strong holds of the Gospel. I really don't know much about the younger Osteen, except for the fact that, yes, he sometimes allows his wife to preach.
I don't allow my wife to preach!
is this the guy that invented mystery science theatre 3000?
Joel Osteen hasn’t figured that out yet.
He preaches to the pew warmers that need a pep talk.
He makes a bundle doing it too!
Oh, he also wants to PLEASE everyone.
If he spoke Biblical truth, he’d hurt feelings and his donations would dry up as well as book sales etc.. MONEY is very important to him ... .
He likes to push WORKS with the “hope” you'll become a “Christian”. It doesn't work. It's the other way around. You become a Christian first and “works” will follow. He's another feel good type that rakes it in. He's a good friend of Obama's - enough said? Also if he gets any fatter he'll keel over ... . Whatever happened to your body is a temple? Take care of it? Oh, doesn't apply to Warren?
I saw his youtube with Larry King: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwL1DThtxYg&feature=related
Not only was he not taking a stand, but he was doing a VERY poor job of it. I have little doubt the crew at the Larry King show got a good laugh out of it.
Joel was afraid to answer the most basic of questions about Christianity in classic politician style. But it was as a very BAD politician would do it.
Joel reminds me of this guy - Marjoe Gortner:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxfThlCcfHI
At least he eventually came clean. There are a lot of charlatins getting rich in the name of Christianity. Prophesy spoke of it.
Here is some more on Marjoe: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=marjoe+gortner&search_type=&aq=0&oq=marjoe
To be clear, I am a professing Christian fundamentalist. And one of the things Jesus told us to watch out for was Wolves in sheeps clothing.
I like this song a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugZq9hiuCJo
My brother-in-law and his family are involved in a similar church, and it has had such a detrimental effect on their family.
Sad. Osteen and Warren are selling something - not sure what.
I thought Dave Ramsey was a pastor. His paying off debts and watching your money is very helpful. Those messages could be woven into the gospel to help families avoid getting in debt.
Osteen’s affect is probably the opposite. “Buy that new Mercedes because Jesus wants you to have it.” ;-)
“Rarely have I seen a man so sincere, trying to do what the Lord has moved him to do, be so beaten down by so many. How do you know what is in this man’s heart. I dare say that any of you critics have listened to more than one or two of his messages, but speak as though you have heard them all. This man has done far more good than any of you who criticize him. Joel closes each and every week with a message to every person listening to “Get involved with a good bible based church”. If people listen and do get involved, isn’t the good and bad side of being a Christian going to be taught by their pastor at the church they get involved with? So what if Joel is more of a motivational speaker than a fire and brimstone preacher?!?! He has probably gotten thousands and thousands of people that were on the fence to get off their behinds and get out and find “a good Bible based church”. Mission accomplished. What have you critics done in comparison?” Posted by DaveinDallas 8/19/2008 I agree with Dave by the way. I have watched Joel many times and he does a lot of good for many people. I have never felt pressured to send him any money. I attend a bible based Church, run by Pastor Greg Laurie. Does anyone have anything bad to say about Greg Laurie from Harvest in Riverside, California?
As far as using the “D” word on a religious thread I promise to try to avoid it.
Regarding the “old time country pastors” in your area. Those are men to look up to indeed.
Is that REALLY your evaluation of if something is right and true? By how many people are willing to go along for the ride?
LOL... don’t say “d-——” either, Markos33. I had a post deleted from a religious thread for such a euphemistic remark to a bodily function.
I, too, have met PhD’s in theology or Divinity who I wouldn’t trust to pick a Bible out of a lineup of rectangular objects. That said, ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ and if you are interpreting it, you really ought to be able to read it in the original language. I’ve also seen too many people take Biblical positions ultimately based on translation artifacts.
She isn't critizing "Christian pastors", she had a valid point to make about Joel Osteen. I agree with her, and I've been around a long time. I stand with the newbie.
Oh son, if you're a Christian, then you'll have to check it out. And if you're not, then there's even more reason.
He's an old country boy from Texas, who wound up as the pastor of the “Church of the Open Door”, in Los Angeles, CA..
If you can imagine me being a pastor of a high falutin’ church in Los Angeles...that's about what it is like.
Just google Though The Bible Radio with Dr. J. Vernon McGee and you'll be there. By the way, he's with the Lord now, but the message lives on.
