ADVOCATE

A title of Christ, who is called "our Advocate with the Father" (I John 2:1). Also the title of the Holy Spirit, sometimes translated Paraclete, whom Christ promised to send to his followers (John 14:16). Christ is our Advocate who defends the cause of Christian believers against their accuser, the devil (Revelation 12). The Holy Spirit is our Advocate as "the person called to one's side" to strengthen and plead our cause, implying that we effectually seek his aid. (Etym. Latin advocatus, an advocate, one "called upon" to plead.)

Since the word means simply "one who pleads" it can apply to really anyone. In popular piety, it is at times applied to the Blessed Virgin Mary advocating for us to Christ:

... Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

In many languages "advocate" means "attorney at law" -- a defense lawyer.

When I was posting this earlier I did thnk of the word, Advocate, in the Hail Holy Queen. Just didn’t say anything about it.
