I’d say Vatican II was used as an excuse to hijack the seminaries. For decades, gay priests ordained in the 60s have been “forming” our young men and ejecting those who put up too much of an argument against homosexuality. The priesthood was a way for gay men to have a position of honor in their families without outing themselves.
However, I have great hopes that, as those old priests from the wacky 60’s die out, the seminarians of today may have true vocations. After all the scandals and low regard for priests, the young men who are accepting that vocation today probably do truly have a calling. It’s not the revered role it once was. It’s more of a servant’s role now— and that’s probably more what Christ had in mind.
A good friend of mine was expelled from seminary back in the 70s for being 'intolerant' of homosexuals. He couldn't stand the constant bedhopping. Fortunately he didn't leave the Church.
The old queens are dying off and Rome has gotten serious about cleaning house of the last of them. Benedict XVI has appointed some very good bishops.
We had a take-no-prisoners Irishman in charge here, a couple of priests who thought it was o.k. to bother the altar boys found out that they had a lot more to fear from the Vicar-General than they did the forces of law and order (even though one of them went to prison). The former V-G is still around and he is a terror to evildoers everywhere. I'm pretty laid back and not afraid of too many folks, but my spine just automatically stiffens whenever he's around. I wouldn't want him mad at me!
**Id say Vatican II was used as an excuse to hijack the seminaries. **
Also very true!
But Pope Benedict saw to it that the seminaries were cleaned out.
Now he is after the nuns. (And he’ll clean house there, too.)
