Micah 6 (excerpted from "The Message")
Bible Gateway ("The Message" edition) ^ | 700 BCE | Micah

Posted on 07/09/2009 2:00:12 PM PDT by Recovering_Democrat

...I am bringing charges against my people. I am building a case...I delivered you from a bad life in Egypt;

I paid a good price to get you out of slavery...I ...made it plain how to live, what to do... what God is looking for in men and women.

It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don't take yourself too seriously— take God seriously...

"Do you expect me to overlook obscene wealth you've piled up by cheating and fraud? Do you think I'll tolerate shady deals and shifty scheming? I'm tired of the violent rich bullying their way with bluffs and lies.

I'm fed up. Beginning now, you're finished. You'll pay for your sins down to your last cent. No matter how much you get, it will never be enough— hollow stomachs, empty hearts. No matter how hard you work, you'll have nothing to show for it— bankrupt lives, wasted souls.

You'll plant grass but never get a lawn.

You'll make jelly but never spread it on your bread.

You'll press apples but never drink the cider.

You have lived by the standards of your king, Omri, the decadent lifestyle of the family of Ahab. Because you've slavishly followed their fashions, I'm forcing you into bankruptcy. Your way of life will be laughed at, a tasteless joke. Your lives will be derided as futile and fake."

The prophet Micah was apparently a rural prophet in Judah. After the northern kingdom of Israel fell, the people of the southern nation of Judah began to become lax in devotion to God. The leaders and the nation as a whole were being warned.

My question: is this applicable to our nation today?

"For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." (Romans 15:4)

It is applicable to people in our Nation.

And...the Message paraphrase is horrible (not so much in Micah 6,but definitely in other passages).

The Old Testament is prophecy and shining examples on how to live life. Applicable today? You betcha!

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

The Bible is ALWAYS relevant to today. This is why prophets were killed, they said hard things to people who didn't want to hear it.

We all know what God wants, He told us plainly, yet we stiffen our necks and rebel against our ONLY HOPE. Right now, this year, if we would repent our sins, and pray to Our Savior, He would be quick to forgive, but we are sure that we can get away with 50,000,000 dead babies, sodomite marriage, adultery, fornication, and a basket full of other abominations. We even justify ourselves saying "We don't do those things", but I can go into any church of any denomination and find all these things and more.

We have Obama today because we deserve him. He may be the man who destroys the most powerful country on Earth. Is that from God? Do we think it was an accident? Obama could be the president that HATES America and is destroying us ON PURPOSE, for his religion says we are STEALING from the 3rd world countries. Were our eyes covered with scales? Were our ears covered so we couldn't hear the truth? The truth was there in our faces, but it was ignored.

For me, that's Biblical in nature, it's no accident. Always remember Pharaoh and other Kings were used to punish Israel for their sin. He doesn't have to send angels to punish or use other believers to crush a disobedient child. God is God over good and evil alike.

The Bible is a history lesson from God and we continually fail to do our homework.

Just as an aside, I watched the movie "Obsession" this week and they make it plain that there is evil overtaking the world and we have our eyes covered. Radical Islam is CLEARLY the religion of death worship. There is no life in their religion. Can you have a Billion people that follow Satan? Some would suggest we have 300,000,000 following a death cult in the US. The answer for all of these questions is found in the Word of God, yet it is the dustiest book in the house. If we believe we can murder babies under US law and God won't hold BELIEVERS accountable, we haven't understood God's message to His people. We can be personally saved, but our country fall if it isn't based on His Law. Our founders said we should always prefer Christians for our leaders.

P.S. I always loved that verse that has God saying I place before you good and evil, blessing and cursing, life and death. I have this vision in my head of a man with a pensive look and a furrowed brow trying to decide if he would rather live or die. Then God has to tell him, “CHOOSE LIFE!” How dumb can we be?

No, this was addressed to the stingy people of Judah, I believe.

Is it addressed to us, too?

I am not a big fan of “The Message” paraphrase for study...but it does suit its purpose.

NIV and NASB are best for study imho.

Of course. When nations turn from God, bad stuff happens.

“NIV and NASB” are both modern perversions of my Holy Bible! King James 1611 or Geneva Bible 1599 ONLY!

How is the NASB a "modern perversion"? It is the best word for word translation and it is based on older and far more manuscripts.
