A new statue of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, foundress of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, the oldest Catholic college for women in the United States, was dedicated to today (June 28)

The life-size statue has been placed near the entrance of the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the end of the main drive just east of the fountain.

A new walkway with lighting and landscaping leads to the statue site, and benches and a plaque will be added soon.

The bronze likeness of Saint Mother Theodore is a replica of the statue designed by artist Teresa Clark of Terre Haute and carved by Nicholas Fairplay of Ohio for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

It is also used for smaller versions that are available at The Gift Shop at Providence Center at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

The new statue, which shows Saint Mother Theodore in a walking-like motion, was funded by the late Larry Fleschner, a local attorney and business owner, who died from cancer September 30, 2007. He attended the canonization of Saint Mother Theodore in Rome on Oct. 15, 2006.

Larry had a strong devotion to the Catholic faith after his conversion a few years earlier. He had great respect for the Sisters of Providence who provided him with spiritual guidance and support during his illness. He developed a friendship particularly with Sister Marie Kevin Tighe, who served as the liaison between the Congregation and Rome for Saint Mother Theodore’s beatification in 1998 and her path to sainthood.

The outdoor shrine where the new statue stands is available for public viewing, prayer and meditation.

“We’ve shared this story many times with many groups. Saint Mother Theodore is a woman for all time, and for people of all faiths. We have had pilgrims from all 50 states and more than 60 foreign countries visit Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to honor her, to pray for her intercession and to learn more about her,” said Sister Denise Wilkinson, the Congregation’s general superior.

“This new statue also honors Larry Fleschner, his life and his bond with the Sisters of Providence. He truly made a difference in the community and we are grateful that he chose to continue his legacy and his devotion to Saint Mother Theodore in this way,” Sister Denise added.

This was a truly beautiful ceremony. The statue is so lifelike. Anyone who is passing through West Central Indiana, and can stop, should visit the Shrine for Saint Mother Theodore. It is truly an inspirational experience. I consider myself lucky enough to be able to do so almost every day.
