Disclaimer: I am former LDS and "anti" mormonism. I post articles from official mormon sources that often relate to current discussions taking place on the forum to provide a means for open discussion in the Religion forum.

FROM THE RELIGION FORUM MODERATOR:

Open threads are a town square. Antagonism though not encouraged, should be expected

Posters may argue for or against beliefs of any kind. They may tear down other’s beliefs. They may ridicule.

On all threads, but particularly “open” threads, posters must never “make it personal.” Reading minds and attributing motives are forms of “making it personal.” Making a thread “about” another Freeper is “making it personal.”

When in doubt, review your use of the pronoun “you” before hitting “enter.”

Like the Smoky Backroom, the conversation may be offensive to some.

Thin-skinned posters will be booted from “open” threads because in the town square, they are the disrupters.

http://www.freerepublic.com/~religionmoderator/

Thin-skinned (emotional, whiney or mercurial temper) posters are the disruptors on open threads.

Not one of their sacred "Temple" ordinances are in fact a "restoration" of a single Temple rite from the ancient.

THE JERUSALEM TEMPLE vs THE MORMON TEMPLES

By Richard Packham
Mormons like to claim that their temples are a restoration of the temples that were built in Old Testament times. That claim collapses if one compares the Jewish temple with the modern Mormon temples.

There were four successive temples built on Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Although built over a period of centuries, they did not differ essentially from each other in basic design, and all had the same rituals and purpose. All the Mormon temples (except the first two, in Kirtland and Nauvoo) resemble each other in design and use. But the Mormon temples are fundamentally different from the ancient temples in Jerusalem, as the following table shows.

Jerusalem Temple Mormon Temples
Only one temple at any one time Over 120, more added each year
Headed by the High Priest Headed by a Temple President
Officiators (priests) were hereditary, full-time, supported by temple offerings Officiators are lay volunteers, part-time, unpaid
Rituals described in detail in the Old Testament Ritual details (except for baptism) secret
Rituals only for the living Rituals for both living and dead; mostly for dead
No oaths required of worshipers Secret oaths required of participants in the endowment
No marriages performed Marriage (sealing) "for eternity" must be performed in the temple
"Holy of Holies" was empty (the first temple [Solomon's] contained the Ark) "Holy of Holies" contains an altar
Only priests entered the actual temple building; all others remained in the appropriate courtyard (Court of Israel for men, Court of the Women for Israelite women, or Court of the Gentiles) All worshipers enter into the temple building
Altars were used only for offering sacrifices of food and animals Altars are used only for kneeling in prayer and for sealing ceremonies
Main altar stood outside the temple building, before the door All altars are inside the temple
Principal function was offering sacrifices, which included the slaughter of animal victims Principal functions are baptizing for the dead by proxy, "sealing" and the secret "endowment" ceremony, which includes instruction in secret signs, handshakes, and taking of secret oaths, mostly performed as proxy for dead persons
The veil of the temple separated the Holy Place (the Sanctuary) from the Holy of Holies The veil of the temple separates the Celestial Room from the previous Endowment room; no veil at the entrance to the Holy of Holies
Only the high priest passed throuogh the veil of the temple All participants in the endowment pass through the veil
Only the priests wore special robes All participants (including women) wear special "robes of the holy priesthood" in the endowment ritual; officiators wear plain white clothing
High priest's robes were colored, richly decorated and jewelled (Ex 28-29) Robes are all white (except for a green apron)
All Israelites could worship at the temple, without regard to their righteousness Only Mormons who have demonstrated their righteousness are admitted to the temple
Fire descended from heaven and filled the house when Solomon's temple was dedicated (2 Chron 7:1-3) No fire has descended from heaven at the dedication of any Mormon temple
Any man "with a blemish" was barred from the temple; blemishes are listed at Lev 21:17-23 - blind, lame, flat nose, brokenfooted, brokenhanded, crookbacked, dwarf, eye blemish, or "broken" testicles Men with facial hair are barred from officiating in the temple; no physical problem or "blemish" is a bar to entering
(But having undergone a gender-change operation is a bar)
Primary purpose of temple worship was to obey the law. No notion of "salvation" or idea of rewards in the afterlife Baptisms, endowments and sealings are primarily to secure blessings in the afterlife - "exaltation" in the highest degree of heaven

Is there nothing the two kinds of temple have in common? Yes, but not much:

For all time past, and until time is no more, probably, men have attempted and will attempt to find the answers God has not given. Whether it is in the field of science (Darwin, Sagan, etc.) or in religion (Smith), men have attempted to fill in the blanks with their own wisdom, and in their own strength. And almost without exception - some people will follow.

The search for answers is fine, but when you begin to ignore the plain things that God has spoken, or you presume to speak for God what He has not said, you have taken a wrong turn. There are some things God has reserved for Himself alone to know.

The Old and New Testaments can be historically and archaeologically supported, not so for the Book of Mormon. It seems then, that it was written under Smith’s own strength to fill in gaps of knowledge (Jesus in America, what about the Indians?, etc.) that were not known, and apparently not meant to be revealed.

Did he have a motive other than to try to help mankind? His history as a treasure hunter and his disagreements with the churches of his time seem to suggest he did.

Calling the building used for services a temple is not new outside of the Jewish faith...

The French Huguenots in the 1600s called their buildings, temples rather than churches or cathedrals, and there was a big one in La Rochelle...

Many congregations flourished during the period that the Edict of Nantes was “recognized” by the king of France and the Catholic Church...1598 until 1685..

I see many pararells between the Huguenots and what Joey Smith and BY copied...

Living in New York, Joey Smith would have known many families who had Huguenot forebears and had heard their history from their grandfathers...

He would have read their accounts in the books of that time...

However he must have ignored the part where Huguenots valued the word of God and held their Bibles in such high esteem that they baked them into loafs of bread in order to take them with them when they fled from france...

They risked their lives rather than give up the precious words of their faith in Jesus Christ..

The words that had been preached to them freely in their temples...

It would appear that the Huguenots had all the Testament of Jesus that anyone will ever need...the Old Testament and the New Testament...

If the Huguenots had the complete “Covenant” in 1680, what was Joey Smith and his cohorts doing writing something different ???

Another “covenant” another “testament, another jesus..

“We dont worship the same Jesus that the Christians worship (Gordon Hinckley)

Acts 20:30 well describes these twisted things by those who would draw disciples after themselves.

Call it Joe worship.

You're right. Mason's also call their buildings "Temples"

The French Huguenots in the 1600s called their buildings, temples rather than churches or cathedrals, and there was a big one in La Rochelle...

Great people of faith, who never attempted to say they were restoring lost Jewish "covenants," and "ordinances."

In fact, Mormonism is a copy of Masonic ceremonies. It's a proven fact.

Thank you for the article

I can testify several things that were given in my Patriarchal blessings in 1988 have been manifested.

This was given to me by a Patriarch who at the time we had never met nor knew each other, I was his 3rd blessing.

Yes the Masons..

Some of the Huguenots would have been masons...

Many of the middle class artisans were Huguenot...

Gold smiths, silver smiths etc..

But they called them temples because of the Catholic Church with their churches ...

The English church was not so picky...

:)

And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.

Now that is a winner right there, but you should keep going:

2 Corinthians 11:12-15

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.
13For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.
14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light
.
15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

Now that's a keeper...

That is indeed the brass nuts of Mormonism.

If you take everything they say at face value, then you have to come to the conclusion that Jesus was a liar and a fraud who failed in his stated purpose of establishing a new covenant and his Church.

This would not happen for another 1,800 years after his death by Joe Smith.
