Waaaaaaay behind you (don't want to get splattered with blood when they chop your head off after you've stuck your neck out)
i.e., it's better than kneecapping D'Arcy, but not exactly courageous)

Obviously good of the Bishops to support Bishop D'arcy, but they could have, and SHOULD have been entirely more forceful in their support of Bishop D'arcy and his rightful actions. Instead, they posted a half-baked pile of milquetoasted words.
Bishop D'arcy is to be fully commended for deciding not to attend the commencement at Notre Dame. He did the right thing, and sent the
correct message. Politics cannot get in the way of the truth. The half-hearted news blurb by the other Bishops is weakened when it could
have and should have been clear and forceful.
God Bless Bishop D'arcy and Father Pavone and all others who criticized Obama being allowed to attend the ND graduation.
More on Bishop D'arcy here............

I wish this had been stronger.

I think they've done what they had to do at this point, support the Bishop in charge. If they back D'Arcy, then by implication they back everything he says with regard to Notre Dame.
I do wish they had used clearer and tougher language. But, then, I trust the Lord will guide the Magisterium to do what is in accordance with His Divine Will.

While I wish it might have been stronger, it remains quite significant. Expressly to support a particular bishop on a particular action against a particular university, after that university fought back so cheekily and after
America magazine basically warned the bishops to shut up, indicates that enough of the bishops recognize that it's put up or shut up time.
What they do the next time they are in-your-face challenged remains to be seen, but I would interpret this as firing back at America and the Kmiec Catholics who told them to butt out.
