In ecclesiastical law a cleric with ordinary jurisdiction in the external forum over a specified territory; the Pope with unlimited jurisdiction; diocesan bishops and their vicars; prelates nullius; capitular vicars and administrators filling the vacancy in a diocese. Also superiors general, abbots primate, provincial abbots of exempt monasteries. Their representatives too are called ordinaries. (Etym. Latin ordinarius, regular, usual.)

I knew that bishops, diocesan priests, vicars and administrators were entitlted ordinaries. I didn’t know it also referred to abbots also.

This is why laity that assist with the distribution of Holy Communion are called
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. They are NOT Eucharistic Ministers -- one of my pet peeves.

Only the ordinary is an Eucharistic Minister!!!
