"Egypt's State Council issues report stating Christians are infidels, and apostates from Islam should die"

SNIPPET: "CAIRO, Egypt, May 12 (Compass Direct News) – In the dilapidated office here of three lawyers representing one of Egypt’s “most wanted” Christian converts, the mood was hopeful in spite of a barrage of death threats against them and their client."

SNIPPET: " Expressing outrage at El-Gohary’s “audacity” to request a change in the religious designation on his ID, the report claims the case is a threat to societal order and violates sharia (Islamic law).

“This [report] is bombarding freedom of religion in Egypt,” said lawyer Said Faiz. “They are insisting that the path to Islam is a one-way street. The entire report is based on sharia.”"

It is amazing that Islam is based on fear - fear of being exposed to the masses as the lie it is.

“No surprise here.”

Sadly, no. I suspect it won’t be long before we are reading the same thing from Turkey and perhaps even from Lebanon.

 (...)   Resistance for Oppression:
The Arab's oppression led the Copts to several rebellions, but these rebellions failed to break the yoke of oppression or achieve independence. The Copts in the eastern Delta fought against the Ommayyds oppression in 725 A.D. A large-scale Coptic revolt against the Abbasids took place circa 815 A.D. El Maamoun, the Abbasid Caliph, had to bring in a large army with elephants to conquer the Copts revolution of 815 A.D. Even as late as 1176 A.D. the Copts of the city of Koptos revolted against the oppression of the Turkic rulers. The policy of heavy taxation, pillage, and violence was also accompanied by forced migration of Copts to other parts of the Islamic Empire, and settlement of Muslim Arabs into Egypt. As a result, many of the Copts were forced into Islam to escape the continued oppression and heavy taxation. The forced Isalmization policy was followed by most of the Arab rulers, and later on also by most of the Mamluks and Turkic rulers. Gradually, the population of Muslims increased and the Copts decreased. The population of the Copts decreased from 9 million at the time of the Arabs conquest 641 A. D. approximately 700,000 at the early 1900's(...)

We have some Copts in our parish, one a young woman who married one of our parishioners last fall. All of them say that the oppression is episodic and all speak of dear friends who are Mohammedans. The fact remains, however, that none of them believe that there is a real future for Christians in Egypt (or elsewhere in the ME except perhaps Syria of all places and maybe Jordan).

By the way, una faccia, una razzia!

True, the Islamic world is turning for the worse. We shouldn’t be giving Egypt a dime.

I have never heard a Coptic saying anything close to that. Look how they are forced to live.

Even though there has not been one case of swine flu, the govt has started to kill all the pigs there. The pigs are raised by Christians there. This is just another attack on them.

“I have never heard a Coptic saying anything close to that.”

Do you spend much time with them? I attend Liturgy with Copts virtually every Sunday. They are valued members of our Orthodox community as well as the larger secular community around us. Our community, in fact, has a large Arab Christian component and they all say the same things, no matter if they are from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon or Syria. Its very important that we as Americans listen to people who know what the situation is on the ground in the ME rather than assume that we know better because we are Americans or allow ourselves to fall prey to our own parochial political agendas.

I think that there is a misunderstanding here. I believe that you said that your Coptic friend stated that the oppression is only occasional. That is what I was disagreeing with. I speak to Coptics a lot and yes they know firsthand what a nightmare living under Islamic rule is.

“I believe that you said that your Coptic friend stated that the oppression is only occasional.”

The Copts (plural) who are members of our parish do indeed say that oppression, beyond the petty indignities which have generally been a hallmark of life for Christians living in Mohammedan lands, is episodic. Interestingly, they see American/Western European society as nearly as inherently (if not more so) destructive of Christianity as is the Mohammedanism of much of the Middle East. In that they share a sentiment which one hears pretty much everywhere in the Christian East.

That is what I was disagreeing with. I have been told it is more then episodic. Did you watch the video that I posted?

“Did you watch the video that I posted?”

Yes...and? Surely you don’t think all Copts are the Zeballeen, or do you? Christian South America is full of cities with “garbage people” sections. The restrictions on the building of churches is an Ottoman relic, though it is indeed still in effect.

Frankly, nothing in the video comes as news to me, nor would it to any other Eastern Christian.

No I do not think that all of them are Zeballeen. Like I said, the Coptics that I know made it out to be a lot worse than your friend did. Christian South America has nothing to do with Christians suffering under Islamic rules. I never said that the video was be news to Eastern Christians. I was just putting it out there.

Take care.
