In addition to being a product of modernism, it is also consistently Mariophobic. In Luke 1:28 she is described as “favored one” as opposed to “full of grace”; in John 2:4 “and to thee” is redacted from Jesus’s mouth. In John 19:27 St. John the teenager is presented as a homeowner, and his adoption by Mary is made to look as some kind of trivial economic arrangement. None of these inventions are based on the original text.
It is, basically, a scandal of a translation.
The NAB uses "revolutionaries," and I've read that that is a possible meaning for the Greek word, as well as "thieves." My surmise is that the Greek word was pretty general, perhaps comparable to our "ruffian" (a tad old-fashioned, but you get the point), and was used to apply to a variety of acts of hoodlumism ("hoodlum" might do it too?). Of course, to the modern Left, "revolutionary" is a term of approbation, but I think -- to say the least -- that aspect was totally lacking to the original Greek!
