Um...you don't have a Christian education at all if you don't know about the Jews.
.....here we go again, that is soooo Fourth Century. The history of Judaism is a string of Covenants between the Jews and God that were broken by the Jews. Jesus came to bring a new and everlasting covenant, replacing all that came before it. This new and everlasting covenant is not exclusive to the "chosen" people, but available to all who will believe and follow the word of God.
Sounds like you could use a course in Judaism.
I am comfortable with my working knowledge, which according to the article far exceeds the knowledge that most Jews have of Christianity. I have 17 years of Catholic education that put a lot of emphasis on the Old Testament and Biblical history and I lived and worked in Israel for the better part of two years.
“Although true, it has absolutely nothing to do with the original story or my comments.”
It has about as much to do with the story as a Jewish School teaching Christianity.
‘Israeli educators are doing their students no favors by confining them to a ghetto worldview that cripples their ability to deal with people who arent just like them.”
While I agree a certain amount of education is beneficial the term ‘ghetto’ reveals your stance on Jews.
Thank you for your honesty.
This new and everlasting covenant is not exclusive to the "chosen" people, but available to all who will believe and follow the word of God.
This "new and everlasting covenant" is exclusive to non-Jews since it demands that Jews abandon the Torah. (Funny how chr*stians attack Jews for "breaking" the "old covenant" when their real beef is that the Jews won't break it.)
Oh yeah? So what is my stance on Jews?
Do Catholic schools teach that Jesus isn’t the Messiah? Religious schools should teach their religion and respect for others that disagree.
It doesn't. Christianity explains the Old Testament in the light of the New and teaches that the Mosaic Law is not binding on Christians of any ethnic stock. However, some Jewish converts to Catholicism keep the Jewish Law all the same, and that is just fine according to the Church. Christians are free to leave the Old Covenant but there is no demand that they do so.
Uhm, you'd better check with Georgetown and Notre Dame before answering too quickly.
There is a difference between disagreeing about Christ and ignorance.
(Let me answer for him) Ghettoish!
Yet your words suggest a basic misunderstanding. In normative, traditional Judaism...
anyone can be considered 100% righteous without being Jewish, and furthermore will receive a place in heaven and a heavenly reward for being so;
anyone can choose to be bound by the covenants of Judaism at any time; these covenants are not restricted, as you imply, to a restricted club of “chosen” ones;
On the other hand, I cannot think of a single mainstream faith that doesn’t identify unique benefits for its adherents. If I’m wrong, I welcome you to list those that do.
Indeed Protestantism's view is that we are “free” from some of the ceremonial laws but still bound by the moral law. There are no Christians running around dissing Jews because they want Kosher food, or reciting the Shema. Maybe 500 years ago, or maybe from cults, but NOT mainstream Christianity.
BTW, if the majority of Christians really did not consider Judaism a fellow traveler, why would they be the only people on earth who unequivocally support the nation of Israel's right to exist?
One serious question for you - Why do the Jewish people historically seem to identify with the oppressors and demean their protectors? Why would the Jewish vote prefer Obama to Bush? Carter to Reagan, etc?
Oh I dunno, define the word ghetto.
I learned very little about the Jewish religion in Catholic school and NOTHING about Islam.
I don’t have a problem with this. In fact, I have much bigger things to worry about.
It should come as no surprise that we measure time based on the life of Christ - BC and AD. Many have proclaimed themselves to be messengers of God; He is he only one that was pre-announced and not just in the Bible. Secular history which affects ALL of us is forever intertwined with religious groups. The Crusades are part of history, as is the UN declaration that established the Jewish state. Christianity is part of history as is Judaism and Islam. The sooner we get to know each other, the better our chances to live together in peace.
No ... it is intended to enlighten you and others. Ignorance is often the source of bias and hatred. That, in turns, leads to incensed reactions. Would you agree? How knowledgable are you in the christian faith?
You wrote:
“My thoughts also......so what. Who would expect a Jewish school to teach Christianity?”
1) It’s not a “Jewish school”. It’s an Israeli school. Not all Israelis are Jews.
2) So Jews should be ignorant? Christians rather routinely teach their children in Christian schools SOMETHINGS at least about other religions. Why would you want Israelis to be ignorant?
