The distinctive emotional, mental, and affective qualities of each individual. A classic position holds that there are four basic temperaments: phlegmatic, or not easily aroused; choleric, or having a low threshold for anger; sanguine, or optimistic and free from anxiety; and melancholic, or given to introspection and pessimism about the future. No single person, it is agreed, ahs only one temperament, although one or the other trait will predominate.
One of the four classic temperaments, characterized by a sluggish indifference even when faced with an urgent call for action. Persons with this temperament are not easily disturbed under provocation, and they can withstand an abnormal amount of criticism or opposition. But they have to struggle against their natural tendency toward inertia.
One of the four classic temperaments, characterized by irritability and bad temper. A familiar term to Catholic spiritual writers. Choleric personalities have to struggle with their natural tendency to anger at the least provocation. (Etym. Latin cholera, bile.)
One of the four classic temperaments, characterized by an easy cheerfulness and optimism, even under great difficulties. People with thei nature, however, have to be careful not to allow their sanguine outlook to ignore problens or fail to face up to reality.
One of the four classic temperaments, characterized by reflectiveness and caution. Persons with this temperament prefer to be alone, are more easily dejected, and have to struggle with overcoming their natural tendency toward pessimism.
I have been to mumerous workshops on these temperaments and can usually tell what the main personality of a person is upon meeting them.
How about the rest of you?
I forget what my Meyers Briggs letters were, however. LOL! (Probably because they are a little different than these.)
