Catholic Word of the Day Ping!
(Etym. Greek meta, after, beyond + physika, physics.)The word metaphysics was first used by the ancient-Greek editor of Aristotle's works, not with reference to the subject matter of the particular treatise that the editor named the Metaphysics, but rather with reference to the editor's placement of the Metaphysics among his edition of the collected works of Aristotle; that is, the Metaphysics came after the Physics.
