Christopher Buckley, the Obama loving publicity seeking son of the great William F. Buckley, writes a 500 word snicker about Newt Gingrich becoming a Catholic, the Catholic Church, and conversion in general in his piece "The Audacity of Poping" for The Daily Beast.
From the term "poping" to accusing the Church of thinking "like a $700-an-hour K Street lawyer," the piece only succeeds in being offensive and sad.
Some lowlights of Buckley's childish rant follow:
BTW: “Poping” in the headline above, which—sorry—I couldn’t resist, is the traditional, British pejorative for “becoming a Catholic.” Did you hear the news? Bertie just Poped! There will be an undercurrent of anti-Catholic bias in the commentary about Mr. Gingrich’s embrace of Rome. As the saying goes, anti-Catholicism is the anti-Semitism of the intellectual class.Firstly, among much of the "intellectual class" anti-semitism is the anti-semitism of the intellectual class. Anti-Catholicism is just as popular but in no way does it replace anti-semitism.
As for Mother Church, she’ll come in for drubbing this weekend for seeming two-faced about the sanctity of marriage. As you know, divorce is still not allowed in the Catholic Church. But here insert a large “however”—she is liberal in the granting of annulments. You see how he shifts blame by saying the Church will come in for a drubbing while he himself is the one doing it. That's what children do.
Mother Church can be rigid, but at times—bless her—she can think like a $700-an-hour K Street lawyer.Name calling?
The stated reason for it is that he wishes to worship alongside his wife, who is described on her husband’s Web site as “a devoted Catholic.” To the extent her devotedness is assessed alongside her early relationship with the then-married Mr. Gingrich, it should be borne in mind that to be “devoted” is not the same as being “perfect.”Then why bring it up? We are all sinners. This is just gossip. This is essentially the old, "She says she's Catholic but she's not perfect and therefore all religion is a lie and I don't have to feel guilty anymore for doing anything I want to do." Because those with standards will eventually fall short of them, allowing others to call out "hypocrisy" as those without standards often can and will do.
Ping!
Mocking a persons confirmation in any church is vile and repugnant. William F. would have had the class to eschew such tasteless behavior.
if you are lending your name or your writing to ‘the daily beast’, you are admitting that you are joining the other side of the culture war.
So, so long Christopher. We hardly knew ye (apparently).
Let’s see if those liberals end up buying your books in the numbers that we did in the past.
This apple rolled a loooong way from the tree!!
Chris Buckley is a disgrace. WFB and his wife were, by most accounts, wonderful people. However, considering the way Chris has turned out (i.e., writing columns like this, fathering illegitimate children, etc.), the Buckleys’ parenting skills were less than stellar.
Chris didn’t have the guts to air his liberal views while his father was alive. Now he has diarrhea of the mouth.
I guess we should at least guve Chris credit for waiting until his father died before acting like a total a$$hat.
I have heard that Chrissy Buckley is gay.
I can’t wait to see Iowa Hawk’s take on this.
During the 1976 Republican Convention here in Kansas City I was employed as a general ‘gp for’ by the NBC Press Corps and one of my duties was to drive dignitaries to their hotels and so forth. Several times I drove Mr. Buckley and his wife to their hotel or to dinner. He and she were some of the most charming people I’ve ever met....and although it wasn’t required, excellent tippers too!
Buckley is proof that rich people should not have children.
The sap must have run pretty thin about the time this man was conceived. He wouldn't make a good pimple on William Buckley's butt.
It angers me that these sophisticates look down their noses at Newt or anyone else who tries in good conscience to make peace with their maker.
I find that I, as a Baptist, have more in common with Roman Catholics than I do the more liberal protestant denominations - Presbyterian, Methodists, Lutherans, Episcopals, etc. We both believe in the basic Biblical teachings about homosexuals, abortion, and salvation. Exactly what does Mr. Buckley believe?
Nice try. Unfortunately, it’s a rumor that won’t fly. He’s married and being sued by a mistress for child support.

I’m not sure WFB was that great, either. He specifically disinherited his grandson (Christopher’s son) in his will, allegedly because Christopher wanted to punish his ex-wife (or, at any rate, the boy’s mother - I’m not sure they were married). Christopher has nothing to do with his son, and WFB apparently was fine with that.
I thnk WFB might have been a fine wrtier, but not necessarily a great person; Christopher doesn’t even have the excuse of being a fine writer.
The better part of Chris ran down his mother’s leg.
Being married never stopped a gay man before....same with David Brooks....”conservative” supporters of Hussein...can’t stop New Yorkers from buzzing about these “married” men and their secret lives.
It may have been the Benedictines or Yale which failed to provide in this sad case. Arrested development is difficult to cure.
