Calvinism is back, so says David Van Biema in the March 22, 2009 issue of Time magazine. Calvinism is listed as one of 10 ideas changing the world Right now. Its third on the list. When most people hear the word Calvinism, they bite down only on the gristle of predestination and then spit out the whole piece of meat. There is much more to Calvinism that is obscured by the misapplied aversion to particular redemption. As a student at Reformed Theological Seminary in the 1970s, I was taught that certain cultural applications flowed from a consistent application of Calvinism. Calvinism is synonymous with a comprehensive biblical world-and-life view. Simply put, I was told that the Bible applies to every area of life. To be a Calvinist is to make biblical application to issues beyond personal salvation (Heb. 5:1114).

You’re welcome.
And insofar what John Calvin said was consistent with Scripture, I agree with him. Where he strayed from Scripture, I disagree.

I happen to agree with you Amos. I think a general education in Systematic Theology by Calvinist, Arminian as well as Covenant and Dispensational writers is useful but most believers are not interested.

I agree with you Sir. Just so you know, I’m not a strict Calvinist. (I’m a 4.4 pointer).

The only ism I care about is biblicism. ...If I find it in Scripture, I believe it. Well, if you find "biblicism" in scripture let me know. ;O)

The greatest Reformations always have occurred in our bleakest hours. It isn’t surprising that Calvinism would rise up once again at such a time as this with it’s focus on God’s sovereign will.

The one that topcat has not been given the right to define. Let me guess. "No creed but Christ"-type biblicism.
Topcat is a known antagonist,
As opposed to roaming gnomes with comments like:
The only ism I care about is biblicism. Beyond that, any of mans constructs is dung.

There is also a great opportunity to teach full-orbed Calvinism to combat the inane Left Behind nonsense that is common in confession-less Christianity.

BTW, if y'all have a chance, please listen to John MacArthur's recent series on the
Grace to You radio broadcast on the doctrines of grace (aka the 5 Points of Calvinism). Excellent stuff. Too bad MacArthur is not more consistent in his Calvinism, limiting it to just 5 points as he does.

Again, the objection is to you trying to define what I mean and then swiping at whatever straw man you construct. I have been in that situation on these threads and am not interested in having a known antagonist do it again.
I said what I meant by biblicism. In spite of this, you still want the control to define what I mean. I’m simply not letting you do it.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

BTW, Calvinism is what is found in Scripture, doncha know?

I agree, Calvinism, carefully and explicitly defined, is found in Scripture. Not everything John Calvin taught is.

Is this the same John Calvin that murdered Michael Servetus?
Why would anyone follow a murderer?
