as far as missionaries go, you HAD to have taken the missionary discussions at one point before you joined. It is required. I actually took them twice because there was a delay in my joining the LDS becuase I was a minor and my family did not approve.

And as a member, all the manuals, talks, teachings, etc. are filtered through the teachings of JS and his successors.
