Here is the response of a Utahn commenting on a Salt Lake Tribune online blog concerning HBO's attempt in its series "Big Love" to increase its revenues by publicly insulting the religious sensitivity of a minority religion: "Anything that gets the LDS "church's magical Mormon underwear in a twist is all right with me!!"
I write for a regional newspaper in Iowa. During the last election campaign, I suggested that Mitt Romney lost the Iowa caucus to Mike Huckabee primarily due to anti-Mormon bigotry. A reader argued that my opinion had no credence because I was a lay leader in the LDS Church.
The writer was either suggesting that I knew exactly what I was talking about and was therefore credible, or that I shouldn't be believed because I was a Mormon, which implies that the writer was a bigot.

It is obvious to an outsider that Utah, or at least Salt Lake City, has within itself a deeply held culture of bigotry. A bigotry so ingrained in the cultural norm that the readers posting comments to the newspaper's blogs, apparently believing they are freethinking and ironic, are saying things online that would never be allowed into print if written about other groups.

Many of us see the cross as celebrating the pain that Jesus suffered instead of celebrating the Atonement He achieved.
We remember His pain, but we look toward the good He did by being willing to suffer it for us.
Probably have less murderers per capita throughout history than the general population. I do consider the Mountain Meadows perpetrators murderers, as I consider the Haun’s mill perps murderers and the Carthage lynch mob murderers.
I guess that makes me unique here since some of you folks seem to regard only the Mountain Meadows incident murder.

Perhaps it is less per capita. I responded to the claim of “never”. Since you agree that those things were murder, then you must also agree that “never” is incorrect, justified or not.

I hate to say it, but I too have seen and heard Mormons speak very badly about others.
One thing though, I do not remember being taught in Church, during my pre-Mormon days, that we should not do it.
I do remember being taught by Lds Church leaders that we need to be respectful of others and of their beliefs.
Think back to the Articles of Faith.
11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

OK. Honest question. One I could never reconcile as LDS, nor did I ever get a reasonable answer to.
Why do LDS missionaries mostly preach to those who live in Western culture (and are at least nominally Christian) rather than to those who have NEVER heard of Christ (Africa, the Middle East, Asia)? Why do they preach of the “apostasy” if they believe they should “allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may”
And I am not talking about the “go out two by two”. I am asking why they choose to witness to those who have heard of Christ.

You are not completely correct. We go and witness wherever we can. Our growth rate in Africa is pretty phenomenal. South and Central America are also growing quickly.
One of my sons is currently in Canada. I would not have been surprised if he had been called anywhere in the world.

The Apostle Paul saw it differently...
Galatians 6:14, “God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Hence my use of the word “mostly”.
He as suffered all he will suffer “was”. Yet we apply the Atonement to our lives when we individually accept His sacrifice on our behalf.
Please re-read my statement. “Suffered” is in the PAST TENSE.
One of my sisters (non-Mormon), when she was a kid in SLC, went out with a Jewish fellow for a while.
She said he had a terrible time with arguments about who were the Gentiles.
They were already taken care of for me at the cross Fred

You took that scripture out of the middle of a talk about how we do not need to have the glory of hurting ourselves by cutting off our foreskin.
Peter was talking about how your causing yourself pain to be like Christ is of no value and about how we do not needing pain to receive the Atonement.
And if you read verse 16, you will see that Paul points you to the outcome of the suffering, the peace of the Atonement.
PS What do you think Paul was talking about when he said, “for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus” in verse 17?
