That’s not what Heperi was saying at all.

Heperi said that Hardy’s excommunication called BYU’s attention to Hardy. I believe Hardy made the excommunication public. A person excommunicated from the church is, on the face of it, not qualified to attend BYU. Hardy knew the excommunication was coming when he reenrolled at BYU. And, even if he hadn’t known it was coming, he knew he was not qualified to reenroll. But he did it anyway.

Heperi was in no position to review the excommunication. That is between Hardy and his bishop. But Hardy doesn’t want his excommunication reviewed, does he?

Heperi gave Hardy a chance to tell BYU why he should have been permitted to enroll at BYU despite the excommunication. He couldn’t or would do that.

Still why do some here who claim to be Christian are defending this behavior is still puzzling to me?

Your question is honest, and despite our differences I really do respect that about you. I can only speak for myself. Even though my answer might be susceptible to being twisted around by others, I will do my best to answer in the spirit you asked.

I believe that rescinding Chad Hardy's degree is a disproportionate punishment and is unjust. Mercy is much more powerful than brute force. I believe that God is both merciful and just. I believe that people hiding within cloaks of big powerful institutions often act ruthlessly and mercilessly.

LoL. If not, he needs to quickly fire his attorneys.

You would not be trying to imply something?

And he showed up to the meeting with his girlfriend, Susan.

In the intervening years, he quit attending church, published his homoerotic calendar, and became a vocal critic of the church for its stand on gay marriage. You do the math.

If he is gay, then why did he show up with his girlfriend, Susan? No need for a “beard” in this day and age, esp since he was already ex’d.

I agree it is a matter of timing. The calendar came out and was known about before he finished his hours.

I don’t know Chad Hardy nor do I know what his sins are. And I am not going to speculate.

BYU should taken action much sooner.

Oh this just gets better and better..

The LDS shoots itself in the foot and drags its most prestigious endeavor into it...

BYU is actually a good school.

Sad...

The problem is the math, and the fact the me and thee will most probably not be the ones adding it all up.

You know as well as I do there are some potential issues here. There is definitely no "slam dunk" for either side.

And accusing this guy of being gay, be it you or LDS leadership ain't helpin’ none. Supporting Prop 8 is not proof of sexual orientation, just bad taste and errant thinking.

Youre a counselor for Pete's sake, you know better than that, I would pray you would advise clients to cease such activities in light of potential litigation. If you have any pull in the legal dept, you may want to point how how stupid it is to get into he says we says argument.

77? Ok.

Perhaps you meant #70?

Either way, just becuase he is for gay rights doesn’t mean he is gay. I know plenty of straight people who are gay rights activists. Some even voted for McCain.

I am not defending Chad’s behavior. I have seen the calendar (SIL got one as a joke in 2007) and told my SIL I found it distasteful.

Chad Hardy’s sins are between him and God.

And BYU has a right to have a code on honor, I have attended several schools with similar codes. No biggie.

My problem with this whole thing is the timing. Action should have been taken sooner, rather then let him walk and then withhold his degree.
