But the king replied to Araunah, "No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing," So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them.
(II Samuel 24:24 )
David's heart was bursting with gratitude now that the plague of suffering was over. He was trying to buy a piece of land from a farmer, so he could erect an altar and sacrifice a burnt offering to his God. The farmer said: "David, don't pay me anything for the land. It's for God, so I won't charge you anything."
"Oh, yes you will," replied David, "because I will not offer my God a gift which costs me nothing."
That is the perfect spirit and attitude toward Christian giving. How many times have people cried, "Oh, if I were only rich, or if only I had more time or more talent I would do this or I would give that to God." No, you wouldn't! And if you did give it to God, He wouldn't want it. God doesn't want the leftovers after we have spent the best on ourselves. God doesn't want the smoke of a misspent life blown in His face, after we have burned the candle of our lives for Satan. God doesn't want the crumbs after we have had the steak and lobster. Does God rejoice when we party late Saturday night and then drag ourselves half-conscious into His presence on Sunday morning? David knew that an offering which cost little was in reality no offering at all.

so he could erect an altar and sacrifice a burnt offering to his God. Is that a good idea?

This very messgae was the entire theme/premise of the movie "
Facing the Giants"....which is why the Death Crawl scene was the highlight of the film.
"Your very best, Your VERY BEST, Your VERY BEST!"

Broklyn Tabernacle Choir sings a song
Giving my Best..
Awesome song...
“You are the one that gave that sacrifice; So now I’m giving my best I’ll give my life”
I can’t watch Facing the Giants without getting something in my eyes.
My kids were watching it the other day and I was “sleeping on the couch” My Daughter looked over at me and said Daddy why are you eyes and cheeks all wet when your sleeping?” lol

David also knocked up the wife of one of his soldiers then sent him to the front lines to die.
So just because David did this or thought that doesn’t make it right for us to immitate.
You really think that those guys enjoyed seeing the water they risked their lives for get dumped on the ground?

So just because David did this or thought that doesnt make it right for us to imitate.
All men are just men, and we all make errors in judgment. Sometimes those errors are so egregious that they effect even those whom would die for us.
David admitted his error when he was confronted by Nathan, albeit God still made him pay for his sin. His own sons fought against him and each other. God even told David that while his sin was in secret God would allow his son's sin against David to be in public. Thus his son Absalom slept with David's concubines in front of all of Israel in a tent out where everyone knew what he was doing. This was to shame King David in front of his subjects for his secret sin against the God and the nation He gave him to rule.
The lesson we get from David is he was truly sorry for his iniquities and God knew it because God, as only God can, knew David's heart.
Again David sinned when he ordered a census against God's will and that is why there was a plague. However David was truly apologetic towards God again and that is why he wanted to buy the threshing floor from Araunah. That is where the place where the plague was stopped.
It is not David's actions we are always told to follow but the way he loved God and truly asked for forgiveness in his heart. Only God can read the heart of man, and only God knows when a man truly is repentant of his sins. Remember the heart of all problems begin in the heart of man.
King David had a heart for God and we should all look to his love for God and try to exemplify in our own lives that kind of love for God as he did. However as humans we will eventually allow our flesh to get in the way sometimes, and like David we can know we have a righteous God who will forgive a broken and contrite heart.
