This is a sample of Greek Orthodox Byzantine music chanted by nuns in a Monastery of northern Greek Mainland (Hsuxastirio Timiou Prodromou Akritoxoriou Sidirokastrou Serron). The Hymn is an extract from a book called "Theotokario" and it is dedicated to the Most Holy Mother of God (Theotokos, Virgin Mary). It is usually chanted in Greek monasteries during the afternoon (after Vespers). The pictures of the video come from a different monastery of Northern Greece (Giannitsa/Pella, Iera Moni Agiou Georgiou Anudrou).

BEAUTIFUL!
Eastern Orthodox liturgical music just might be the most breathtakingly gorgeous music on the planet.
I love the beauty of the byzintine musical style. I always enjoyed it during my time in the GOC. That was a blessing, thank you.

Many years ago, when my oldest son was 13 years old, I took him down to the village in the old country. My uncle had business with the abbess at the monastery up on the mountain and he asked us to accompany him. As we were sitting in the “archondariki”, the room where visitors are received, and as my uncle did his business with the abbess, one of the other nuns, my cousin Parthenia, asked my son and me if we would like to attend vespers with her and the other nuns. We did.
In the 1000 year old chapel, by candle light, the nuns chanted, among others, this hymn. My son, a workman and I were the only men there. The flickering of the candle light made the ancient wall icons dance almost like ghosts. Near the end my son whispered to me, “This must be what heaven is like , Dad!”
Our monasteries, especially the women’s monasteries, are pieces of heaven on earth.
What a blessing, that must have been something to experience!
Thanks for sharing that.
