Pope-Pelosi Wednesday Meeting On
Whispers in the Loggia ^ | February 16, 2009 | Rocco Palmo

Posted on 02/16/2009 4:59:12 PM PST by TaxachusettsMan

In news from another part of the Roman-American fray, it's been confirmed that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will meet Pope Benedict following Wednesday's General Audience as part of her Italian tour: On Monday at noon in Rome, the Vatican’s Press Office confirmed to [Catholic News Agency] that Pope Benedict will be receiving U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in an audience at noon on Wednesday.

Pelosi, a self-proclaimed "ardent Catholic" who has sparked significant criticism from fellow Catholics in the U.S. for her pro-abortion views, arrived in Italy on Sunday for an eight-day official visit.... Although numerous reports have been published either confirming or denying that Pope Benedict would receive Pelosi in an audience, the Holy See’s Press Office confirmed to CNA on Monday at noon Rome time, that the Holy Father will receive the U.S. representative on Wednesday at midday.

The press office made clear that the Pope will meet with Pelosi in his capacity as a head of state since the Speaker of the House is the third in line to lead the U.S., should the president and vice president be unable to do so....

Over this past weekend pro-life activists and bloggers launched verbal salvos against the Vatican because they believe that the Holy See plans to present Nancy Pelosi with an award.

This is definitely not true, the Vatican’s press office told CNA. The idea that Pelosi would be awarded by the Vatican most likely is the result of activists confusing the visit to the Vatican with the Speaker of the House being awarded by a group of Italian legislators for being the first Italian American to reach such a high rank in the U.S. government.

Following August comments on Meet the Press attempting to reconcile her faith with her pro-choice stance, the California Democrat was criticized by a number of Stateside bishops and invited to a "conversation" with her ordinary, Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco.

ANY photo-op that is NOT accompanied by news that the Pope has told her in no uncertain terms how scandalous her public support for the crime of abortion is will be deeply disappointing to faithful, pro-life Catholics, many of whom have worked FOR YEARS with only the minimum amount of support from some of the Church's pastors.

YOUNG PRO-LIFE CATHOLICS ESPECIALLY WILL BE WATCHING!

They think the world of the Pope, as they made clear during his visit to the United States, and a great part of that admiration is based on their perception of his steadfast faith in all that the Church teaches and his fearlessness in proclaiming that.

What a "hit" his credibility with this portion of the Church - the future of the Church (and some would say, its present in many places!) - will take if the Wednesday encounter with this CINO (Catholic In Name Only) phony politician turns into a happy-clappy pow-wow.

Especially if it turns out to be true that the appointment to New York will represent the Vatican's deciding to "take a soft line with President Obama."

Again, the remark attributed to Loissy comes to mind: "Every Sunday, 30,000 sermons are preached in France, and still the people believe!

Helpful phone numbers for voicing one's opinion:

Archdiocese of San Francisco (when's the "conversation" gonna happen, Your Excellency?) (415) 614-5500

Apostolic Nunciature, Washington, D.C., (202) 333-7121

what a disappointing decision, and a betrayal of the fauithful

that the Pope let himself be used by this evil woman to cover herself in the sanctity of a faith she does not practice faithfully, and in fact- scorns through her public works

I hope Pope Benedict XVI issues a formal interdict or publicly excommunicates her for her anti-Catholic scandals.

The Pope is meeting with her in her capacity as 3rd in line for the Presidency. Period. I hope, however, he tells her how she is going to hell for her hand in snuffing out innocent life and also in her presenting her own ill-formed views as a viable Catholic position. She needs to be excommunicated, as do all public leaders who support abortion.

How do you know what the content of a meeting that has not even yet happened will be?

C’mon Mr. Pope — spill some ‘holy water’ on her, or hold up the cross. I’ve seen what these things do in movies to creatures of Ms. Pelosi’s ilk...

I’m holding out hope that the Pope will sprinkle her with holy water and that she will spontaneously combust. Or, more likely, melt.

She is a horrible woman. She never met a baby should would not abort. Well the Church did fund ACORN and 50+% of Catholics voted for Obama.

I really like this Pope but no more. Almost as bad as phony pastor Rick Warren shilling for O.

Personally, I’d like to see him poke her in the eyes, ala Moe from the Three Stooges. I just can’t believe out of all the people in this world that she gets an audience.

I know that the photos will be used to bolster her image in the USA, regardless of what the Pope may or may not say to her

His refusal to meet her anyhwere except in a confessional booth would have been much more appropriate

I am not going to second guess the Pope. Ostensibly, the meeting is between the head of state for the Vatican and the Speaker of the House of the US. What is said in the meeting, and the Vatican's pronouncements following it will be very telling.
