Movie Review: Gran Torino and the Gospel
self

Posted on 01/11/2009 4:38:08 PM PST by the_conscience

My wife and me have been anxiously waiting to see the movie since the trailers have been airing on TV. It looked to be a classic Clint movie and it was and even more. Clint plays his traditional moody character who despises most people and distributes justice in typical Clint fashion.

It's set in Detroit with all it's melting pot character and Clint take full advantage of the opportunity to disparage every ethnic group. If your sensitive to racial eptithets this movie will surely offend you.

The ending, however, departs from the typical Clint formula. I don't want to ruin the movie for anyone who has not seen it but it may be one of the clearest presentations of the gospel message of substitutionary atonement that I have ever seen. In fact, near the end the Cross is clearly symbolized. The unity of the movie could best be summarized by John 15:13.

'Clint plays his traditional moody character who despises most people and distributes justice in typical Clint fashion.'

I knew there was a reason for the kinship I've felt for the man.

Walt’s (Eastwood) wife’s priest is a central character in the movie. Yeah, there’s a lot of blasphemy. And his confession leaves a lot to be desired.

But the end is worth it...

“Any blasphemy? I hate blasphemy. Thanks for the short review.”

Not per se. A priest uses the Lord’s name in vain and Clint is generally anti-religious throughout.

I LOVE DIRTY HARRY, CLINT EASTWOOD, One of the last best actors left in the world.

Hats off to STEVE MC QUEEN, also, best show I’ve ever seen. THE GREAT ESCAPE.

They don’t make em like this anymore.

On Amazon or Netflix, I’d definitely “star” this review as “helpful.” Thanks!

My wife and I saw it this afternoon. We enjoyed it very much and considered it well worth the time to watch it.

I was just saying because I blue-screened my pc from watching a movie from that site. Had to rebuild it.

I just got home from seeing it. OP is right in that the ending is NOT typical early Eastwood, but it is good. I missed the cross. There is a definite correlation to Christianity...

What is it with Clint Eastwood and the Catholic religion? The last two movies (Million Dollar Baby) and this one have him as a fallen away Catholic.

“My wife and me have been anxiously waiting to see ...”

This is all I needed to see this was by someone totally ignorant of the English language. Why would I want to read more?
