Is the Bible God's Word? (Do you believe the Bible is the only word of God?)

THE CATHOLIC BIBLE

Holding the "Douay" Roman Catholic Version of the Bible aloft in my hand, I ask, "Do YOU accept THIS Bible as the Word of God?" For reasons best known to themselves, the Catholic Truth Society have published their Version of the Bible in a very short, stumpy form. This Version is a very odd proportion of the numerous Versions in the market today. The Christian questioner is taken aback. "What Bible is that?" he asks. "Why, I thought you said that there was only ONE Bible!" I remind him. "Y-e-s," he murmurs hesitantly, "but what Version is that?" "Why, would that make any difference?" I enquire. Of course it does, and the professional preacher knows that it does. He is only bluffing with his "ONE Bible" claim.

The Roman Catholic Bible was published at Rheims in 1582, from Jerome's Latin Vulgate and reproduced at Douay in 1609. As such the RCV (Roman Catholic Version) is the oldest Version that one can still buy today. Despite its antiquity, the whole of the Protestant world, including the "cults"* condemn the RCV because it contains seven extra "books" which they contemptuously refer to as the "apocrypha" i.e. of DOUBTFUL AUTHORITY. Notwithstanding the dire warning contained in the Apocalypse, which is the last book in the RCV (renamed as "Revelation" by the Protestants), it is "revealed":

". . . If any man shall add to these things (or delete) God shall add unto him the plagues written in this Book." (Revelation 22:18-19)

But who cares! They do not really believe! The Protestants have bravely expunged seven whole books from their Book of God! The outcasts are:

The Book of Judith
The Book of Tobias
The Book of Baruch
The Buck of Esther, etc.
* This disparaging title is given by the orthodox to Jehovah's Witnesses, the Seventh Day Adventists and a thousand other sects and denominations with whom they do not see eye to eye.

Have they baptized your dead Christian grandmother? Or is she still buried?

“But I’ve yet to see a MORMON say that the Catholic way will get a person to heaven.”

I can say (for myself) that the Catholic way definitely will NOT get a person to hell.

OK so discount everything in the Bible that was not spoken personally by Jesus.

The WORD is Christ. John 1:14.

The Bible is the part of the deposit of faith handed down through apostolic tradition by Christ through his apostles and the Church.

Sola Scriptura (the idea that scripture alone is the Word) is a false doctrine and non-biblical. There is not one verse anywhere in the Bible in which it is taught, and it therefore is a self-refuting doctrine.

That's pretty funny, just compare "AmericanArchConservative's" posting history with that of "graybeard58s", you will find that "AAC" is much more qualified to "speak for him/herself than I am.

I have found his/her posts to be quite lucid, while I struggle to express myself in writing.

Do ->YOU<- believe that we will be judged by our works?

Of course - the book is quite clear.

BUT....

Your SALVATION is NOT judged 'by your works'.

That's a quotation of the writings of Paul, which is open to anyone's interpretation.

Sorry; but clear words are NOT. They MEAN what they SAY!

This means that plural marriage is ONLY acceptable when the LORD commands.

No

it

doesn't.

It MEANS exactly what it says.

The 'people' DID harken to those things and GOD had to use HIS power, thru the United States Governmemt, to END them!

Sola Scriptura (the idea that scripture alone is the Word) is a false doctrine and non-biblical. There is not one verse anywhere in the Bible in which it is taught, and it therefore is a self-refuting doctrine.

Oh??

NIV Mark 7:6-10
   6.  He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: "`These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
   7.  They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'
   8.  You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."
   9.  And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe  your own traditions!
 10.  For Moses said, `Honor your father and your mother,'  and, `Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'

NIV Mark 12:26-27
 26.  Now about the dead rising--have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, `I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' ?
 27.  He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!"

NIV Luke 16:19-31
 19.  "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
 20.  At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores
 21.  and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
 22.  "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
 23.  In hell,  where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
 24.  So he called to him, `Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
 25.  "But Abraham replied, `Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
 26.  And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
 27.  "He answered, `Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house,
 28.  for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
 29.  "Abraham replied, `They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
 30.  "`No, father Abraham,' he said, `but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
 31.  "He said to him, `If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"

NIV Luke 24:25-27
 25.  He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
 26.  Did not the Christ  have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
 27.  And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

NIV Luke 24:44-45
 44.  He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
 45.  Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

NIV John 1:45
Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

NIV John 5:39-47
 39.  You diligently study  the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
 40.  yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
 41.  "I do not accept praise from men,
 42.  but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
 43.  I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
 44.  How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ?
 45.  "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.
 46.  If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
 47.  But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"

 Romans 15:4
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

 Romans 16:17
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.

1 Corinthians 4:17
For this reason I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.

2 Thessalonians 2:15
So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings  we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

NIV Luke 24:45
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

(Oh Lord; this is my prayer for us all!)

Acts 17:11
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

They did NOT ask the Priests, pray to GOD, search thru entrails, get an astrological chart - but EXAMINED the Scriptures!!!

UNIVERSAL DEFINITION CULT - Any group which has a pyramid type authoritarian leadership structure with all teaching and guidance coming from the person/persons at the top. The group will claim to be the only way to God; Nirvana; Paradise; Ultimate Reality; Full Potential, Way to Happiness etc, and will use thought reform or mind control techniques to gain control and keep their members. This definition covers cults within all majopr world religions, along with those cults which have no OBVIOUS religious base such as commercial, educational and psychological cults. Others may define these a little differently, but this is the simplest to work from. THE 'ORTHODOX BIBLE-BASED CULT' A group is called a cult because of their behaviour - not their doctrines. Doctrine is an issue in the area of Apologetics and Heresy. Most religious cults do teach what the Christian church would declare to be heresy but some do not. Some cults teach the basics of the Christian faith but have behavioural patterns that are abusive, controlling and cultic. This occurs in both Non-Charismatic and Charismatic churches. These groups teach the central doctrines of the Christian faith and then add the extra authority of leadership or someone's particular writings. They centre around the interpretations of the leadership and submissive and unquestioning acceptance of these is essential to be a member of good standing. This acceptance includes what we consider non-essential doctrines e.i. not salvation issues (such as the Person and Work of Christ.) The key is that they will be using mind control or undue influence on their members.

I am not aware of the JW's, Mormons or the SDA executing anyone becasue of their beliefs. The Catholic Church is more af a cult by definition. You are an idiot.

Mormons are quick to insist that they will progress into some level of heaven after they pass, but which heaven? It is common for them to admit that they have no idea whether of not they have met the lenghty requirements that are mandatory for entrance into the Celestial Kingdom.

Apostle Richard G. Scott said in general conference in 2001:

Time and time again at funerals, statements are made that the deceased will inherit all blessings of celestial glory when that individual has in no way qualified by obtaining the necessary ordinances and by keeping the required covenants. That won’t happen. Such blessings can only be earned by meeting the Lord’s requirements. His mercy does not overcome the requirements of His law. They must be met.

In Mormonsism, everyone will experience "salvation by grace," or the gift of immortality (resurrection from the dead). According the 10th Prophet Jospeh Fielding Smith:

"Immortality is the gift of God, through Jesus Christ, to all men; by which they come forth in the resurrection to die no more, whether they have obeyed him or rebelled against him. This great gift is theirs; even the wicked receive it through the grace of Jesus Christ, and shall have the privilege of living forever, but they will have to pay the price of their sins in torment with the devil before they are redeemed. "

I think it reasonable to conclude that exaltation or(salvation as we Christians would understand it) is merit-based in Mormonism.

I initially responded to your questions because of your willingness to take a stand on the handbook copyright issue. You were respectful and I was giving you answers as best I could in good faith. If I have raised any questions in your mind about the church, then it is best for you to look at better sources than am I. Since this thread has attracted the ever-prowling Ping group which has a serious case of LDS-derangement syndrome, it is no longer appropriate to discuss what to me are sacred matters here. Go to LDS.org if you really want information. Thanks for your thoughtful posts to me.
