A Catholic Case Against Gay Marriage: "The Knot That Can't Be Tied"

MAN'S SEXUAL ENERGIES are of extraordinary power and complexity. Is this energy something we can use however we wish, or is there some objective standard to which this energy should be conformed?

The Western tradition, like many other traditions, has consistently held that there is such an objective standard, and it is the reality called "marriage." Today, however, many think that marriage can be whatever they want it to be. Instead of seeing marriage as an objective reality to which we align ourselves, it is seen as something that must conform to our notions and desires. Let's call this perspective on marriage "secular marriage." (originally published in Envoy Magazine)

This article provides a very good synopsis of why the Catholic Church rejects "gay marriage." It's especially good for sharing with those who are confused on this subject.

A very very astute point. And succinctly said.

I'll be stealing it too, don't ya know...

Yes, I agree with you. He makes some excellent points that serve well in our discussions with those who promote this.

patrick-

this is what you said-
“those who are confused on this subject.”

i would infer that by “those who are confused on this subject” you mean people who have different opinions then you. if your claim is that people who have different opinions then you are “confused” then i would have to conclude that you, yourself, are confused. confused by the idea that in this country you are not forced to think a certain way, and that differences in opinion are acceptable. but with your close-mindedness aside, here is the reality of the issue-

-if gays can get married then gays are happy, you are bothered by it, and people like me just dont care

-if gays cannot get married then gays have to fight and voice their opinion and in some cases live an unfulfilling lifestyle, but people like you will feel happy and comfortable, and people like me still wont care

either way sir, i dont care... so if this doesnt go your way then....whoop dee doo... get over it, why spend so much time and energy actively tryin to prevent somethin from happening that will never directly effect you or those you care about? your entitled to your opinion so whether or not your change your mind please consider being a little more open minded.

if gays cannot get married...

That is factually incorrect. Gays can get married. A gay man may marry a woman.

Tim33ny,

You inferred wrongly. My point was that there are many Catholics and non-Catholics who are confused about what the Catholic Church teaches on this issue and why She teaches it.

One may care or not care about this issue, but that doesn’t mean necessarily that one isn’t confused by it.

Jesus said, “From the beginning of the (their) creation God made them male and female.”
