You are wrong. Our Lord’s tormemtors and murderers did not (for the most part) repent of their sins or ask forgiveness. Our Lord forgave them anyway. The members of the lynch mob that murdered Saint Stephen neither repented of their sins nor asked for forgiveness. Saint Stephen forgave them as well.
Should we do differently?
No he didn't. He said "Father forgive them for they know not what they do."
He did NOT say "I forgive them."
He was asking the Father to grant forgiveness, not giving it Himself.
