The Rev. Andrew Greeley, the best-selling novelist and Chicago Sun-Times columnist, fractured his skull in a freak fall in Rosemont Friday and is listed in critical condition at a suburban hospital, his family and friends said this afternoon.
The outspoken priest had just lectured before a religious conference in Rosemont, and had taken a taxi to the nearby River Road Blue Line L stop.
As Greeley, 80, exited the taxi, his jacket snagged in the door and he fell down and hit his head around 3:30 p.m. Friday, according to Rosemont police and friends.
Right now hes critical but stable, very stable, his niece, Laura Durkin said. Doctors are hopeful and pleased with his progress from last night to today. Theyre pleased with his current condition.
Excellent points.
>>I hope it knocked some sense into him and he asks for forgiveness.<<
You, my FRiend have the best response!!!!!
>>but maybe that is for Christians, not Catholics<<
Um, maybe you didn’t notice this before, but Catholics are Christians.
Prayers for the speedy recovery of this consecrated man of the cloth. May his heart draw closer to God and may we all be aware of our own sinfulness before we judge this man’s soul.
“Lord, forgive this miserable SOB his sins.”
Yes. This is a terrible injury that many people never recover from. I pray that God be with him now.
Did you not see any of the replies on the Pray for Our President Elect thread? Thanks for playing.
Greeley regularly preaches error and sows the seeds of dissension, which for a priest is a grave sin. May God forgive him for that.
My (Mo Synod Lutheran) Pastor agrees with you. He says this of himself and of Pastors, generally.
I would ask - who are those who have decided that Andrew Greeley preaches error and sows the seeds of dissension. I know of no Church council which as so decided . I know of no bishop who has so declared. He is a priest in good standing, says Mass regularly and is asked to speak to priests and bishops on a regular basis. His research is respected at all levels of the Church, even by those who may disagree with some of his conclusions.
I ask further - who are the self-righteous of such superior wisdom and holiness who accuse this priest of grave sin?
I have said that I know of no Christians who would so act, but apparently there are many who consider themselves super-catholics (I obeyed all the rules so why dont they ) who are totally lacking in the charity that marks a true Christian. Catholics are supposed to be Christians but often do not act like it. They are CINO - Christians in name only.
Um, excuse me?
This is really simple and has nothing to do with charity.
At my corner is a stop sign. The rule is that all cars must stop there.
If a red car, with licence plate number 123 456 is owned by Joe and every day I see Joe blow that stop sign, then I can say, “Joe is a lawbreaker”.
I don’t need a city council to tell me so.
And no one here is saying they obey ALL the rules. But most of us try. Fr. Greeley is mislead but still breaks the rules and is unrepentant.
Public sin is...well, public. You can be assured that we are all sinners but a public person has much more responisibility. To paraphrase, to whom much is given, much is expected.
Judging Fr. Greeley’s state of soul is indeed beyond our purview.
However, anyone with a “Catechism of the Catholic Church” and 8th-grade reading comprehension skills can identify much of his writing’s content as erroneous. This is a simple question of fact, beyond argument.
You are OBVIOUSLY not a Catholic.
