St. Teresa died on the night between Oct. 4 and Oct. 15, 1582—right when the Gregorian calendar reform took effect in the Catholic countries (the ten days after Oct. 4 were dropped from the calendar to get the calendar back in line with the seasons as of A.D. 325, when the First Council of Nicaea set the rules for calculating the date of Easter).
