New Scientific Evidence For The Shroud of Turin

Scriptural Reference To The Shroud

John 19:38-42 After this Joseph of Arimathe'a, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body. Nicode'mus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds' weight. They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

John 20:1-10 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

New Scientific Evidence

The Shroud of Turin has been venerated for centuries as the true burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth.  A faint image of what appears to be a crucified man is present on the linen, but no evidence of the image being anything extraordinary could be seen with the naked eye. There was no way of understanding the image's uniqueness until 1898, when the Italian photographer, Secunda Pia, took the first photographs of the Shroud. During the development of the photographic print, Pia noticed the negative image on the Shroud looked like a photographic positive. This discovery raised scientific interest that has continued to the present day.

1988 the Shroud was subjected to radiocarbon analysis and showed the cloth to be 14th century in its origin.  The reason for the erroneous radiocarbon dating is due to a rewoven backing or patch added to the Shroud.  There is now conclusive evidence proving the sample used to date the Shroud was actually taken from an expertly done rewoven patch added in the middle ages.  More data from Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico indicates the linen Shroud is actually much older than the published date from the 1988 carbon tests.

Much of the new scientific evidence has risen from the "Shroud of Turin Research Project" or STURP, a highly respected group of scientists who have dedicated themselves to uncovering the scientific mysteries of the Shroud.  STURP members are from these organizations:

The STURP team has revealing astounding data that now has convinced many scientists of the miraculous origin of the image.  No medieval artist or alchemist could have produced the results present in the Shroud.   Research so far has proven that:

Much of the recent research on the Shroud of Turin has been focused on the determination of "how the image could have formed on the linen" and of "what type of radiation could have formed the image"?  The answer to the first question of how the image formed on the linen was fairly evident. In addressing the second question of "what type of radiation formed the image", there are various natural and supernatural theories that have risen in attempting to solve this scientific mystery. Research indicates the unknown radiation is "biophysical" in its nature.  Knowledge of such "biophysical radiation" is currently beyond our scientific understanding.

The scientific evidence revealed in the image scorched on the Shroud of Turin certainly eludes to the miraculous resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth and provides a tremendous witness to Jew and Gentile alike of God's omnipotence and Jesus divine nature.

Thank you for that post. I have always believed and always will believe that ‘The Shroud of Turin’ was/is the burial shroud of Jesus.

They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

Right there is the biggest problem with the Shroud, in my opinion. The Jews wrapped the body in cloth packed with spices. The so-called Shroud of Turin is a cloth which was simply folded, with half on top and half under the corpse, and directly in contact with it. I reluctantly conclude that the Shroud is probably a fake.

The shroud may be the primary wrapping which has the greatest length and width, followed by secondary wrapping of a thinner variety that would bind the entire body. The spices may or may not have been packed between these layers. The scriptures do not allude to the exact manner in which a Hebrew burial wrapping is performed.

At least your conclusions are reluctant! You may want to weigh the scientific data on the Shroud along with your reservations again.

Thank you, but there isn’t anything new in this article. Well, not if you’ve followed the saga in the last 20 years.

How could a flat folded sheet, then covered by a tight wrapping, yield a neatly centered image of a human body? I've heard that Jewish burial methods were a little like the wrapping of an Egyptian mummy. They did not simply fold a sheet loosely over the corpse.

On a more abstract level, consider that Jesus rebuked the people of his day for demanding a "sign." No image or relic should be necessary. God wants us to have "faith [which] is the evidence of things not seen."

Hello,

Your questions have been addressed by Mario Latendresse, Ph.D. in a thorough analysis. (The Turin Shroud Was Not Flattened Before the Images Formed and no Major Image Distortions Necessarily Occur from a Real Body). The article can be found at
http://www.sindonology.org/papers/latendresse2005a.pdf

His conclusion is stated below;

Conclusion
It was shown that, once the blood stains formed by
contact, the top half of the Shroud could not have
been lifted up to be attened to avoid major im-
age distortions. After the blood stains formed, the
Shroud essentially stayed in the same position prior
to the image formations. It is not impossible that
some local movement of the Shroud occurred, for ex-
ample near its edges or the face. Although, there are
no strong evidences in that direction.
It was also shown that a attening of the top half
of the Shroud is not required to avoid major image
distortions. That is, there exists some natural way
for the Shroud to lay on the body while the images
are formed without causing major image distortions
{ albeit the Shroud had to be laid carefully over the
body. Moreover, it appears that there are some small
image distortions, coherent with the Shroud laying on
a human body form. This covering is also consistent
with the known blood stain locations on the Shroud.
We have also conjectured that the mechanism of
projection is probably neither normal to the skin, nor
to the sheet, and not really perpendicular to gravity,
but is probably following the shortest path to the
sheet. Further research is necessary to conclude on
this aspect.

You have the intellectual right to be skeptical and to cross examine the conclusion of this research. Considering that God has given us this “sign”, and preserved it for over two millenia, one should “not look a gift horse in the mouth”, but rather appreciate it’s existence. The scriptures indicate that “signs are for the unbelieving”. I believe that the “Shroud” is a powerful witness to those whose need some physical proof to step forward in faith. That is why the ministry of “Scientific Apologetics” is accepted by Church today.

Concerning Jesus rebuke, He spoke to Jews who like their Gentile counterparts were never satisfied with the signs provided. Their own unredeemed nature blinded their reasoning. For those who are called to God’s grace, these signs will help connect one’s awarness of heavenly realities.

My point is that (according to my understanding of Jewish burial customs) a body was tightly wrapped, somewhat like an Egyptian mummy. There was no big sheet folded neatly over the body, without intervening packed spices, to form a precisely centered image. I think the Shroud is probably just another medieval fake; manufacturing and selling relics was a lucrative business in those days.

The Scriptures repeatedly show that God demands, requires, and rewards faith. If everything in heaven and earth was clearly visible to anyone through materialistic, naturalistic "signs," there would be no need or room for faith. There would then be no reason for a final judgment based on whether one had showed faith and trust in a Savior.

Dear Hellbender,

You appear to be an expert too! Please explain in detail the Hebrew custom of burial and your source of information.

From your “Hellbender’ nomer, you motivation for quoting scripture seems a bit inappropriate. But then again, Satan also quoted scripture, didn’t he?

Hello Tara,

The Shroud is to me more scientific evidence of the diety of Christ. My Jewish upbringing inhibits me from venerating it rather than the person of Messiah himself. Nevertheless, it may be the only true image of Yeshua (Jesus) that we can see until His return. It also is such a tremendous witness to the power of God, and a great riddle for scientists to tackle.

I used the phrase "my understanding of Jewish burial customs..." precisely because I am not an expert, but have heard some things from people who do seem to be experts. If you or anyone else is an expert on Jewish burial preparations of that era, you go right ahead and tell us how neatly laying a single sheet of cloth on top of a body equals wrapping a body and applying spices as described in the Gospels.

The hellbender is a large aquatic salamander I happen to like. Any other implications of the name are coincidental. I prefer the connotation that I am one who tries to deflect Satanic influences (which certainly flourish in today's world), but that was not in mind when I chose the name.

The Gospel is simple, and it does not require images, icons, relics, statues, incense, priestly vestments, etc. to have effect on a sincere person.

Dear Hellbender,

If you will take the time to put aside the debate we are having on how a burial shroud is applied to a 1st century Hebrew corpse, I think you may be able to follow my train of thought. Since the precise application of a typical Hebrew burial shroud is debatable, let us focus on the phenomina that has the scientists talking.

Have you ever worked with autoradiography? I have! An autoradiograph uses a radioactive source normally bound to a biological entity in a gel, animal, etc. that is held in close proximity to photographic film or an imaging screen. An autoradiograph is the closest comparison to the image present in the Shroud. The radiation of an autoradiography easily passes through less dense material, but shows an image of more dense material on the imaging screen. Actually the Shroud is closer to a “phosphorimaging screen” than it is to “photographic film”, because the “phosphorimaging screen’ and it’s associated instrument can capture digital three dimentional autoradiographic images. Likewise, the Shroud’s scorched image contains the very same 3D images when digital analysis is applied. No artist, has ever been able to produce such a 3D image of anything. These images have been analyzed by professionals from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Los Alamos National Scientific Laboratory and others (see my article).

This research has come to these conclusions:

*The Shroud behaves as a photographic negative.

*The Shroud encodes three-dimensional (3-D) data which corresponds to a three-dimensional body.

*The image is without substance (not painted on), but rather is due to a chemical change within the linen itself.

*The image exhibits clear evidence of rigor mortis with no evidence of decomposition of the body, suggesting the body image occurred no later than 36 hours after death.

*The Shroud image exhibits anatomical structures clearly not in contact with the cloth and some skeletal structure, e.g., thus suggesting a type of autoradiograph (X-Ray image).

*Medical radiation imaging has, by far, come the closest to reproducing the totality of the image. Yet, the Shroud image remains an unduplicatable mystery.

If you were a scientist, don’t you think you would consider these conclusions before you reject the Shroud’s authenticity over a debate that even you are unsure of.

I'm not dogmatic about the Shroud pro or con, and certainly think it should be investigated with every technology available. I just think that millions of people have come to believe in the Gospel without having to focus on material evidence. The great Apostle and evangelist Paul didn't even witness the crucifixion and resurrection, but became totally convinced of it. Later converts such as C.S. Lewis were not convinced by relics or "scientific" evidence, either. Whatever brings people to a knowledge and belief in Christ is good, but I don't like the see the case for belief hung on things which may be disproven. What Jesus said would "never pass away" was not his burial shroud, but his words.

Hello,

Today's faith in Christ may be more “existential” than biblical in it's approach to faith. As a Jewish believer in Yeshua (Jesus) I understand that the “God of Israel” has done mighty deeds and has left numerous signs and to both Israel and the nations. “The leap of faith” does not have to be blind! I believe the astonishing data gathered in the research of the Shroud has and is moving many undecided individuals to to put their faith in Jesus.

Why do biblical apologists stress the historicity of the events in the scriptures? The secular slant say the bible is a myth. If one does not counter those misperceptions, the world will continue to believe there is no God right up until judgment day.

But back to the Shroud evidence. Take some more time to read the articles discussing the three dimensional aspects of it's image.

I appreciate your honest sentiments. Feel free to read more articles on “science and scripture” and “biblical archeology” at http://www.messianic-literary.com/science.htm and http://www.messianic-literary.com/archaeology.htm .

I saw this news item this morning and wondered about it in connection with the Shroud image:

U.S. physicists have announced a startling discovery about Scotch tape, Malcolm Ritter of Associated Press reports. “It turns out that if you peel the popular adhesive tape off its roll in a vacuum chamber, it emits X-rays. The researchers even made an X-ray image of one of their fingers. Who knew? Actually, more than 50 years ago, some Russian scientists reported evidence of X-rays from peeling sticky tape off glass. But the new work demonstrates that you can get a lot of X-rays, a study co-author says. ‘We were very surprised,’ said Juan Escobar. ‘The power you could get from just peeling tape was enormous.’ Escobar, a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, reports the work with UCLA colleagues in [yesterday’s] issue of the journal Nature. He suggests that with some refinements, the process might be harnessed for making inexpensive X-ray machines for paramedics or for places where electricity is expensive or hard to get.”
