What is the significance of Padre Pio? I have heard of him but don’t know why.

He bore the marks of crucifixion. Active bleeding from his hands, feet, side. Some even say he had a should injury.

Probably the greatest modern day saint for Catholics.

BTW, the church that has been built in Pietrelcina, San Giovanni Rotunda is the SECOND largest Catholic Church after St. Peter’s Basilica. (Just learned that today.)
