And just to show that this WAS NOT "invented" by Pope Pius XII in 1950 and has ALWAYS been believed:

"Assumption of the Virgin Mary" by Peter Paul Rubens, 1626

"Assumption of the Virgin" by Titian, 1516-18

"Assumption of the Virgin" by Annibale Carracci, 1590

"The Assumption of the Virgin" by Botticini, 1475-76

In giving birth thou didst keep thy virginity, and in thy dormition thou didst not forsake the world, O Mother of God. Thou didst pass on to life, since thou art the Mother of Life, and by thine intercessions thou redeemest our souls from death.

--The Troparion of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Tone 1)

The only objection we Orthodox have to the dogmatization of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is that it failed to condemn the heretical opinion that she did not undergo death before her assumption body and soul into heaven.

Is this an accurate summary of the naysayers' position?

Jesus died but rose from the dead = possible.

Jesus ascended bodily into heaven = possible.

Jesus' mother taken bodily into heaven = impossible.

From another thread:

**The feast days of the Church are not just the commemoration of historical events; they do not look only to the past. They look to the present and to the future and give us an insight into our own relationship with God. The Assumption looks to eternity and gives us hope that we, too, will follow Our Lady when our life is ended. **

MARY: MOTHER OF GOD OR MOTHER OF CHRIST?

"...the religious climate of the city of Ephesus with its temple of Artemis and the worship of this “Great Mother,” originally “the virgin goddess,” became conducive to replacing the pagan Artemis with the Christian Mary. It would be a way to merge paganism into Christianity and would facilitate the conversion of pagans into the new faith and religion..."

Wow! Another blessed, calm & collected Catholic thread.

I just don't know what we'd do without all the non-Catholic FReeper Catholicism “experts” to explain & criticize our religion. LOL

Hope you all have a happy & blessed Feast of the Assumption.

Kelly

A lot of people do not believe in Holy Tradition. Nebertheless, here is a tidbit from Holy Tradition.

According to one tradition, Mary was warned of her approaching end by Saint Michael the Archangel, who conducts souls to Heaven, and was surrounded on her death-bed by the apostles, who were miraculously transported to her bedside from their various mission-fields. It was said that Jesus appeared, bore away her soul, and returned three days after her burial, when angels carried her body to Paradise where it was reunited with her soul under the Tree of Life.
