Never said anything about being an expert. One doesn't have to be Chinese to know the language; it's taught in schools all across the United States.
There are 4 different tones for each Chinese character depending on the meaning of that character. When the pronunciation of those words are spelled out in English with "pinyin" it's impossible to know the meaning of the word without the tonal marks.
