US female bishop Catherine Roskam: male prelates 'beat up wives' [Ecumenical]

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has challenged an American woman bishop to produce evidence to back up her claim that bishops beat their wives.

Other bishops also criticised the US Episcopal Church's Bishop Catherine Roskam after she said at the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury that men beat women "because they can".

She said: "We have 700 men here. Do you think any of them beat their wives? Chances are they do. The most devout Christians beat their wives... many of our bishops come from places where it is culturally accepted to beat your wife."

About 670 bishops, nearly all men, are at the Lambeth Confernce in Canterbury, Kent. A further 230, mainly from Africa, have boycotted it because of the liberal direction of the Western church on homosexuality and other issues.

Bishop Roskam's comments are published in the latest edition of The Lambeth Witness, a daily newsletter produced by the Inclusive Church Network, a liberal lobby group working for the full inclusion of gays in Church life.

Bishop Roskam, a suffragan in New York, was speaking as bishops and their wives spent the day discussing violence against women. She said: "Economic downturn increases violence toward women, but you also find violence against women in the richest of households. You can't say it's only the poor who do it."

Her remarks provoked dismay and astonishment among bishops at the conference.

The Archbishop of York said: "I have never beaten my wife, although I can't talk about other people." He warned against a danger of "stereotyping" people because of the culture they come from. He said that Bishop Roskam should not throw out "aunt Sallies" which become divisive.

f you find an unmarried male over a certain age, I would watch my children around him. How many homosexual men adopt male children vs female? How many lesbians adopt females over males? Why do you think that is?

Silenzio is Italian, not Latin.

I never said it was Latin. Thanks for correcting my spelling on the word, however.

I wasn’t saying Protestants didn’t molest children too. I was making a point that being male alone does not a good church leader make.

And I still say being married does not make you not like little boys.

Let's take a look at those chosen by Jesus to be His Apostles:

Simon (a/k/a Peter), Andrew, James, John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, James (the Lesser), Thaddeus, Simon (the Zealot), Judas (the Iscariot) and Matthias.

Not one woman in the group! And there were plenty of women who traveled with Jesus and His Apostles. If Jesus had intended women to serve as priests, He would have ordained one of them - probably the greatest woman of all time - His own mother. But, He did not. Hence, the Catholic (and Orthodox) Churches, following the example of Jesus, cannot ordain women as priests. It's just that simple.

Why do you have a problem with our Lord's decision? Do you feel He was in error?

I am not debating theology with you. It’s a subject I’d rather not delve into when people question me if I doubt God because I don’t view something the way they feel God intended for it to be.

Feel? This is not about theology or feelings. It is all about facts! Fact - Christ chose 12 men ... end of story. He had every opportunity to choose women; He didn't. Hence the priesthood is reserved to men.

In both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, the priest serves as "alter christus". When he speaks the words of consecration: "This is my body", he is saying it in the person of Christ. Christ being a male, it makes perfect sense that He would ordain only men to say those cherished words.
