Is Anti-Catholicism Dead? (Ques. Proposed by NY Times)
NY Times City Room Blog ^ | 7/23/2008 | Sewell Chan

When Gov. Alfred E. Smith ran for president in 1928, his candidacy was derailed in large part by anti-Catholic prejudice. It has been nearly 48 years since John F. Kennedy became the first (and so far only) Roman Catholic president, but experts say that anti-Catholic sentiment — much of it originating in, or as a response to, immigrants in New York — remains an enduring force in American culture.

That was the consensus of a panel assembled at the Museum of the City of New York on Tuesday night to consider the question, “Is Anti-Catholicism Dead?

...The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus — a leading conservative intellectual, a former Lutheran pastor and the editor of the leading Catholic journal First Things — offered a surprising view on the question.

“To be a Catholic is not to be refused positions of influence in our society,” he said. “Indeed, one of the most acceptable things is to be a bad Catholic, and in the view of many people, the only good Catholic is a bad Catholic.”

...He added that anti-Catholicism was as likely to come from the left — sometimes from commentators who believe that a “threatening theological insurgency is engineered and directed by Catholics,” with evangelical Protestants merely as the movement’s “foot soldiers.”

Posters here. That's what I said.

I was referring to the postee, i.e. the person being spoken of/to as "going to Hell". There's no misunderstanding here that you're asking for examples of a singular, non-anonymous, Free Republic, Catholic poster who's making the accusation. I was asking if the accusation had to be against a singular, non-anonymous, Free Republic, non-Catholic person, or if the accusation could have been made against anonymous members of a specified group or groups.

A new exhibit on Catholics in New York tells a story of transformation with some 400 objects and images.

On view are objects that helped fuel anti-Catholic fervor, like best-selling, luridly fictionalized tales of life in convents, including the 1836 “Awful Disclosures by Maria Monk, of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery of Montreal.” The author, a prostitute, was eventually exposed as a fraud and died in 1849 in a New York prison.

> Not in FreeRepublic it’s not! We’ve got some of the most hateful anti-Catholic bigots in the world on this forum.

‘tis in the Natural Order of Things for heretics to hate Catholics, and for wicked sinners to hate the Righteous, and for Liberals to hate Conservatives.

It would be odd if they didn’t. Indeed, it would be against very Nature Herself.

And anyway, there has to be Sinners in order for there to be converts. Otherwise, what do they convert from? ‘tis pointless to convert the Righteous: it’s like preaching to the converted.

Personally, I do not consider the raving moonbats who infect this forum spewing their hatred of either Mormons or Catholics as conservatives. They may pretend to be conservatives in order to avoid a zot.

I agree. They infect the religion forum threads almost exclusively. They've turned that forum into a cesspool if you ask me. I also have never seen any of them on the Freepathon Threads and i've never seen them on any monthly donor lists either...I'm just sayin'.

What a beautiful "fiddle-back"!!

Years ago, American Heritage magazine had an interesting article on "The Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk" and its connection with Samuel F.B. Morse and the Know-Nothing Party.

It's on line at "The Know-Nothing Uproar", but it's scanned text only. The pictures made the article, in my opinion . .. .

I believe that William Miller, GOP VP nominee, with Goldwater in 1964, was a Roman Catholic.

As usual, Fr. Neuhaus, with help from Steinfels, gets the gist of the matter in a nutshell:

Like Professor McCartin, he attributed anti-Catholic sentiment to long-standing historical traditions, including English nationalism that vilified the papacy and Catholic powers like Spain, and the anti-Catholic polemics of the Enlightenment, particularly in France. (The first tradition gave us the controversial Christian evangelical pastor John C. Hagee, and the second the television talk-show host Bill Maher, Mr. Steinfels quipped, to laughter.)

I would add that Protestant Pastor John Hagee has since repented and apologized, I think with great sincerity. Evangelicals and Catholics will always have theological differences, but can--with bigoted exceptions--find enough common ground to extend the hand of friendship and work together.

But the leftist New York Times will never repent or apologize.

Yes, there is still anti-Catholicism in America. We see a little of one kind of it here in FR, mostly from a fairly small group of people, but the most persistent and blatant prejudice can be found in our leftist institutions, with the New York Times running as far out to the front as it can get in its weakened condition.
