.- Archbishop George H. Niederauer of San Francisco, chairman of the U.S. bishops' Communications Committee, the late Tim Russert on Tuesday for his devotion to his Catholic faith, family, work as a journalist and his work with Catholic charities.
"Russert was valued by Americans for his tremendous command of the political and electoral process and his commitment to discovering each aspect of the story that contributed to people having a better awareness of the issues of public life and candidates for political office," Archbishop Niederauer said.
"But those of us who shared his Catholic faith and his deep love for it appreciated his sharing of the story of his own faith and his loyalty to the life of the Catholic Church in this country and the many charities to which he contributed his time and talent," he said.
The archbishop also praised NBC News for asking Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the retired archbishop of Washington, to come to their studio for their staff in the hours after Russerts death.
"Tim Russert was not shy about telling people to turn to prayer and promising to pray for them in their time of need," he continued. "That the network thought of his staff and followed his example speaks well of them."
Archbishop Niederauer said that Russerts producer noted there were two things the newscaster never missed: Mass and an event for his son Luke.
"Russert in his public life was loyal to journalism. In his private life he was faithful to his family, fatherhood and faith. That's a wonderful measure of a man.
Tim Russerts burial is scheduled for Wednesday after a funeral Mass in Washington.
Apologies over the previous thread that was pulled. Did not realize AP no longer allows its stories to be posted.
The headmaster looks just like John Cleese of The Monty Rython Show.
“Monty Python”
dang typos.
I’m impressed tha Russert never missed Mass. His son has big shoes to fill.

I’d watch it, but I can’t stand any more sadness this week. My little sister is in hospice, dying of cancer. She has two, maybe three days left. I will be going to her funeral very soon.
Maria
Thank you so much. I am very sorry about your husband.
I only mentioned my sis to remind people that hundreds of FReepers have close relatives dying every day, or are mourning recent deaths.
Russert was an OK guy, but...please...the orgy over him is another excess of the press.
May he rest in peace...and soon!
I do not understand all of this weeping and wailing, if we are a Christian-Judeao society and our faith is founded on the Bible, we are to govern our lives by the Written Words of Christ, then we should be celebrating. The Bible tells us our time on earth is short and just a prep school for the life to come. So we should be happy that Tim is now removed from all worldly cares, physical problems, he is now reunited with loved ones who have proceeded him and he is happy. The Bible tells us the riches in store for us as we go to our eternal home, that we should look forward to the trip.
Psalm 131. Lord. my heart has no lofty ambitions, my eyes do not look too high. I am not concerned with great affairs, or marvels beyond my scope. Enough for me to keep my soul tranquil and quiet like a child in its mother's arms. as content as a child that has just been weaned. Israel rely on the Lord, Now and for always!
Amen.
Liberals and journalists don't get to Church often. When they get there they don't know how to behave. Since they have run out of Kennedys they appointed Tim for the ceremonial role.
He was a good man but maybe something else is going on. Maria Shriver hit it when she recalled Russert warning her there were very few Catholics in the NBC building. I was half wondering for a while there if they would have Darby O'Gill and the Little People join in on "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road."
Rest assured of my prayers for you, your sister and your family. Remember to stay by her bedside and pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy. Our Lord promised that:
January 28, 1938. Today the Lord said to me, My daughter, write down these words: All those souls who will glorify My mercy and spread its worship, encouraging others to trust in My mercy, will not experience terror at the hour of death. My mercy will shield them in that final battle...(1540) Write that when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful Saviour. (1541)
May God's blessing be upon you both, even if, for a time it, is hard to realize it.
Freep-mail me to get on or off my pro-life and Catholic List:
Please ping me to note-worthy Pro-Life or Catholic threads, or other threads of interest.
Was Russert pro-life? Anyone know?
That’s what I’m wondering because if it wasn’t then I have a hard time taking his “faith” seriously.
Even people of faith lament the loss of loved ones on this earth. The idea that being happy they are in heaven means you will not miss them here is simply wrong.
1) His work and apologetics for pro-infanticide politicians
2) His disrespect to Father Fessio on the 24 April 2005 edition of Meet The Press
