CBS 2 News has learned that Francis Cardinal George is temporarily removing Father Michael Pfleger from his position as pastor of St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church on Chicago's South Side.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports the move comes after several days of deliberation and consultation by the Cardinal, who first learned about Pfleger's racially charged comments about Sen. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from the pulpit of Trinity Unity Church of Christ last Thursday night.
The Cardinal immediately contacted Pfleger who agreed not to refer to the presidential candidates by name, but as CBS 2 reported at the time, there remained the possibility of some further disciplinary action against Pfleger.
The Cardinal reportedly spoke to Pfleger again this morning.
A spokesman for the archdiocese would neither confirm nor deny action had been taken to remove Pfleger. Another spokesman said she expected to have some announcement later today.
Indications are that another Chicago priest would take over at St. Sabina, while plans for the permanent reassignment of Father Pfleger, who's been there far longer than is customary in the archdiocese, would be accelerated....

I’m really glad Cdl George did this. I think the only people who will perceive him as a “martyr” are the flakes at the Rev Wright’s church and the loonies he has no doubt cultivated at St Sabina’s for 30 years. And who cares what they think?
I’m sure we’ll hear howling from him, too; he already announced that because the video came out, it meant you “couldn’t speak your mind in George Bush’s America,” or something to that effect. Of course you can speak your mind - but that doesn’t mean people have to put up with the garbage you say, a point that seems to be lost on Pfleger.
Remember George Stallings in DC. He was finally disciplined (only after he got married, IIRC) and left and set up his very own church. And who even thinks about him or his “church” now? Nobody!
Well, how about that!
The rights and duties of bishops and priests are set out in Canon Law, so bishops can't act in an absolutely dictatorial manner. Nevertheless, all the Diocesan priests are answerable directly to the Bishop, and if Cardinal George wants to forbid Pfleger to preach or publish, if he wants to require him to keep silent, if he wants to reassign him to St. Dilbert's in Mudflats, IL, or leave him without assignment altogether, it's perfectly within his power to do so.
There's no canonical pretext for the Pope to get involved, nor should he. He's the Bishop of Rome, not Chicago.
Get ready for the tantrum to end all tantrums!
My respect for the Cardinal has gone up a couple of notches.
yes.
IMHO, Pflager, as a VERY probable lifetime member, surely is behind reading his monthly NAMBLA publications, and now he can catch up on newest releases he hasn't had time to watch yet of his most prized "Altar Boys Gone Wild" collection.
This has happened before.I remember a black priest adopting a few and I think he was local.
In Chicago that leaves him way too near politics.
“wardaddy, I would not be surprised if this came directly from B16.”
That's not my sense of it.
My understanding is that Archbishops of Chicago have been trying to take this one down a peg for some time. However, he's plugged into the local “urban” power structure, and he's more or less threatened schism or worse if he was messed with by the hierarchy.
But this time, he went a little too far. No one's going to follow him out the door in defense of his overt, blatant racism. So, the hierarchy strikes, which it has desired to do for as long as I've been aware of this one - which is the better part of a decade.
Remember, all cardinals are citizens of the Vatican, which in a sense makes them Roman. Don't mess with us Romans.

Yes, you will. The Church is not a democracy. Besides, the door is always open.
Love your tag line, Mrs. It’s the catz meow...
Actually quite a few priests were defrocked in recent years for being pediphiles. On the Philadelphia Archdiocese’s website they have a list of the diocesan priests that were defrocked (or laicized).

Honestly now, to address the one who says, Dont hold me responsible for what my ancestors did. But you have enjoyed the benefits of what your ancestors did ... and unless you are ready to give up the benefits, throw away your 401 fund, throw away your trust fund, throw away all the monies you put away into the company you walked into because your daddy and grand daddy Unless you are willing to give up the benefits then you must be responsible for what was done in your generation, because you are the beneficiaries of this insurance policy.
In the same sermon, Pfleger impugned white Americans for failing to understand the responsibility they all bore for the historical and continuing afflictions of the black community. Said Pfleger:
"It's like saying to a woman who's been repeatedly raped over, and over, and over, and over, over, and over [and telling her] 'you need to get over it.' 'The HELL I do,' [she would say]. Get the sucker who's been raping me and make him pay.' Well, America has been raping people of color, and America has to pay the price. America has to pay the price for the rape."
Also in that sermon, Pfleger made reference to a recent incident where Senator Hillary Clinton had cried publicly as she became resigned to the fact that she inevitably would lose her bid for the Democratic Partys presidential nomination to Barack Obama. Said Pfleger:
We must be honest enough to expose white entitlement and supremacy wherever it raises its head . [W]hen Hillary was crying, and people said that was put on, I really don't believe it was put on. I really believe that she just always thought, This is mine. I'm Bill's [Bill Clinton's]wife. I'm white. And this is mine. I just got to get up and step into the plate. And then out of nowhere came, hey, I'm Barack Obama. And she said, Oh damn, where did you come from? I'm white. I'm entitled. There's a black man stealing my show. Pfleger then mimicked Mrs. Clinton crying as the audience gave him a standing ovation. Added Pfleger: She wasn't the only one crying. There was a whole lot of white people cryin.
When portions of this sermon were aired widely by the media, Obama denounced Pfleger's rhetoric as "divisive" and "backward-looking," and soon thereafter he announced that he was leaving Trinity church.
I have read that Pfleger was slated to be reassigned after 6 years on the job but he caused major protests to be staged by the congregation and was allowed to stay. A similar strategy was used the next two times he was up for rotation. The spineless hierarchy caved every time, in spite of the policy of reassignment every 6 years. The personality cult situation that Pfleger has developed is exactly what this policy is designed to avoid.
That’s an interesting comment.
Cardinal George is President of the USCCB and a cancer survivor. He allows the TLM Mass openly in his Archdiocese. He also invited Pope Benedict into the famous “Crypt meeting” with all the USCCB Bishops and pushed for the open microphone and press coverage. In advance, he and Cardinal Sean of Boston had stopped with the Holy Father to see the “abuse victims” which stunned the Pope by all accounts. He was totally “part of the program” and filled in the Pontiff fully on what had happened. His comments reflect that if you care to read what he said to Pope Benedict.
Cardinal George is a good, holy man. It is a shame that this has happened in his Archdiocese. So, he moved closely to limit the scandal.
Recall that this priest is very popular at St. Sabina’s. His move is delicate therefore but HE acted.
Frank
Is there a citation as to which writing of St. Augustine's it is from? I'd love to read it. Thanks.
Regarding your tag line, isn't there a statue of V. Capodanno in Manhattan somewhere? I remember reading about it and wanted to go see it, but when I tried to search for it on Google, I didn't get any results in Manhattan.
Perhaps, however, a cult of personality is not supposed to occur in the first place. The priest is supposed to be a spiritual leader/father who cares for his spiritual children. That includes leading by example in virtues such as humility which would preclude a cult of personality from occurring.
Just as one doesn't get assigned a new physical father every six years, it is not the Church's idea that a priest should be reassigned every six years. It was not unknown for a priest to administer the sacraments to multiple generations of a family.
More of this need to be done - getting rid of priests who don’t act like priests.
thanks to all y’all for replying
