I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

Enough strife.

This is one of my favorite prayers. It isn’t very lofty but it’s a simple plea.

Lord, We are Your people,
the sheep of Your flock.
Heal the sheep who are wounded,
Touch the sheep who are in pain,
Clean the sheep who are soiled,
Warm the lambs who are cold.
Help us to know the Father’s love
through Jesus the Shepherd
and through His Spirit.
Help us to lift up that love,
and show it all over this land.
Help us to build love on justice
and justice on love.
Help us to believe mightily,
hope joyfully,
love Divinely.
Renew us that we may renew the face of the earth.

Amen.

Why stop at bowing down? Let’s have some feast days and some prayers! Let’s claim that they stand between us and Christ, that they are our true Advocate! Let’s make them a tri-Redeemer! Let’s get some prayer beads, and say some “Hail Wisdoms” yeah, that’s the ticket.

Of course, our agreement is only limited to one tiny thing (if you regard the Name of the Holy One as tiny).

:D

Isn’t that a typical liberal ploy? deflect with a personal attack?

Ah the joy of being on DU. Wait, isn’t this FR?

Well, on the bright side, at least you’re getting an idea of what Baptism by Fire is! ;-)

This is nice evening prayer.

O God, I thank You
for all the gifts and graces bestowed on me this day.
I believe; help my unbelief.
I hope in you; take away all doubt and fear.
I love you; give me an undivided heart.

[Here examine your conscience]

O my God, I am truly sorry for each and every sin I committed today;
and for all I have left undone.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner!
Dear God, if it is your will,
may I awaken tomorrow to another day,
a day to praise You,
love You
and do Your will.
Watch, O Lord,
with those who wake or weep tonight,
and give Your angels and saints
charge over those who slumber.
Tend Your sick ones, O Lord Christ,
Rest Your weary ones,
Bless Your dying ones,
Soothe Your suffering ones,
Pity Your afflicted ones,
Shield Your joyous ones,
And all for Your love’s sake.

Amen.

Yes, it is a very good sign.

Still, many of us have had little honeymoon periods after our conversions.

You are already being seasoned-before you enter the Church.

God must have big plans for you.

I already recommended the little catechism of the Cure D’Ars because it is straightforward, simple, and accessible, aboput ordinary, every day virtue and temptations.

After seeing this onslaught, I will suggest you read about the life of St. John Marie Vianney, the Cure D’Ars.

I think you will appreciate it.

Pax Christi.

Is that in the works?
I’m sure it would work in some sections of the country, but it might take a few generations to make it fly.

“I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.”

Hey, Dr. Eck: Leave him alone. In this context, “I believe...” plainly means “I could be wrong, but to the best of my recollection...”

The passage, cited as scripture by Christ, is from a book which did not make it into the Septuagint

That's what I suspected. St. John the Chrysostom suggested that perhaps the passage should be read in a way so that it is the faith that should be scriptural. St. Jerome suggests something in Proverbs.

CHRYS. But where here does the Scripture say this? No where. What then? We should read, He that believes in Me, as said the Scripture, putting the stop here; and then, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water: the meaning being, that that was a right kind of belief, which was formed on the evidence of Scripture, not of miracles. Search the Scriptures, he had said before.

JEROME. Or this testimony is taken from the Proverbs, where it is said, Let your fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

Catena Aurea John 7

The passage in Proverbs has little to do with becoming a fountain for others:

15 Drink water out of thy own cistern, and the streams of thy own well: 16 Let thy fountains be conveyed abroad, and in the streets divide thy waters. 17 Keep them to thyself alone, neither let strangers be partakers with thee. 18 Let thy vein be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of thy youth: 19 Let her be thy dearest hind, and most agreeable fawn: let her breasts inebriate thee at all times; he thou delighted continually with her love. 20 Why art thou seduced, my son, by a strange woman, and art cherished in the bosom of another?

(Proverbs 5)

If you find out which book is the quote from, please tell us.

I don’t follow the magesterium and I am saved because I have put my faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and Him only.

The earliest Christians could make the same argument against the Apostles.

Question: Why did Christ appoint Apostles if it was not His desire to act THROUGH others who would spread the Gospel? If salvation is all about you (and you alone), then nothing from the Crucifixion onward makes any sense.

He has filled me with His Holy Spirit and guides my steps.

How do you know? Do tell.

Well what we need is a magisterium to convince us of the need. I know where there is some, Rome

They commemorate, Catholics experience, the Presence of the living Christ.

What the affect of the Presence of Jesus??? I'm filled with the Holy Spirit and I know what that's like but I don't know what it's like to be in the presence of Jesus after eating Him...So what happens??? What's the experience???

They actually do a pretty good job and I’m sure Rome would welcome you, even if they have to teach you not to worship the Bible.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough -- God spoke his whole "Name" in the first person; the tetragrammaton is only the verb (not repeated after a relative pronoun) and it is in the third person.

I'm not sure that's much clearer. I tend to be tryingly picky about things grammatical! ;-)

Sin is a direct attack on God. Therefore, it is impossible that God would encourage anyone to sin...God hardened Pharoah’s heart as a punishment for his sins.

There is no one today that is undeserving of "punishment for his sins". God still needs lots of tools for His plans for us. He still wants us to spread the gospel to everyone, so for our purposes and perspective, everyone needs to be saved. God works on a higher level though.

Since Christ is the Word Made Flesh, the Son, Who is Wisdom, saying “Hail Wisdoms” would be just as appropriate as saying “Hail Marys”.
