I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

According to Christ Himself, hell will be full of many very religious people. Many who call Him Lord and do many wonderful works in His name. Do you understand this? If not, then you don’t know what you’re doing and you’re headed for serious trouble.

Catholics are still doing EXACTLY what the Lord instructed us to do nearly two thousand years ago. Perhaps those who are outside His Church should look at your advice.

My faith does not wedge the Blessed Virgin into the Holy Trinity either. There is a big difference between a human who has been blessed by the Lord, and Almighty God.

Your church, your responsibility.

You haven't established that it is "my church" doing this.

Big building just across the Tiber. I have a picture of that as well. Would you like to see it?

Is it as blurry and poorly framed as the others?

My faith doesn’t try to wedge Mary into the Trinity.

Nor does mine. I am Catholic.

Some around here do just that.

I think you have to make the distinction between some superstitous people selling charms, which happens among people who are Protestant too (do Protestants not read their horoscopes?), and the official teachings of the Catholic Church on charms.

The only ones around here trying to “wedge Mary into the Trinity” are the anti-Catholic fetishists pushing false versions of Catholic teaching.

Keep one hand on your wallet at all times.

Are you sure you're on the right thread? We're not talking about Benny Hinn or some other televangelist trying to buy a new Gulfstream.

I don’t have the scorecard. But the contradictory things that I see RC’s post here boggles the mind.

This is another of the cleft sticks that people try to put us in. The imagination is that there is a group with time hanging heavy on its hands which goes around from place to place and exercises minute, compulsive, fanatical control over everyone all the time. And every time the Church DOES exercise some control, that's taken as proof of her innate corruption and lust for power.

And with this unsubstantiated and unsubstantiatable premise, then every deviation from the desirable norm is considered approval.

Even the Catholic Church has to choose its battles. And I can imagine the grief we'd get if we ended up depriving some seller of religious bling of his livelihood.

If the Church ever takes a laid back and patient attitude and if her members decide that instead of messing over some Turk's business they'll pray for him to grow in faith to the point where he wants to quit selling bling, that's faithlessness.

Ultra Sonic 007: welcome to the Church where everything you do is wrong.

Welcome.

I can’t recommend a book per se, but if you have it available, the EWTN network has a show that is quite good called “Life is Worth Living” I would highly recommend watching.

They are reruns of television lectures given by Archbishop Fulton Sheen. They are entertaining and informative and contextual.

Any Church will have classes for those looking to join the faith, as well as other studies for those already active in the Church.

Which of these features the brightest, shiniest white cladding?

a) The fuselage of Benny Hinn’s private jet?
b) The fuselage of Benny Hinn’s Nehru jacket?
c) The fuselage of Benny Hinn’s preternaturally-glistening dental work?

Oh, come one... At least have the courage of your convictions! 007 said he found religion, and you noted that Hell was full of religious people, and that if he didn’t understand that he was in for serious trouble.

Now, you not only deny saying he was going to Hell, but deny even suggesting it? (What you denied was that “[y]ou SUGGESTED that this new Catholic convert is going to hell.”) How can we respect your positions when you don’t respect them enough to stand by them?

>> I only gave him the SAME warning that Christ gives to ALL of us. <<

Yeah, you warned him about going to hell when he announced he was joining the Catholic Church but that had nothing to do with the fact that announced he was joining the Catholic Church?

But we’re supposedly the ones who are so arrogant because we have the audacity to say, “Welcome home”?

Look, I don't know what your intention was, but the post reminded me of a person at a wedding who tells the couple to watch out for venereal disease and to avoid contributing to over-population.

Maybe some of us scoff. Maybe some of us have a thing about yanking the chain of someone when he's happy. I knew a lady who couldn't stand the sight of happy children. Really.
