I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

I am proud, but he doesn’t take compliments well. He is so humble that he has always run from them. Compliments and anything that could lead to vanity has always fallen off of him the moment they are offered.

I just wish everyone that attacked him would know the kind soul they were picking on. He really is that rare human being.

From the posts your son has made, it’s clear that he is one of those rare ones. He has certainly brought honor to you, in the character that shines through his posts.

Adding on to that — the reason why the conversion were not faster is because the Arabs imposed a tax on non-Muslims (Jaziya) and preferred to get the money! Also, if you converted, you not only gave up you religion, but also your ethnicity as the highest thing in being Muslim to be Arab — why do you think the Taliban who are descendents of Zoroastrians, Hindus, Buddhists, Nestorian Christians, shamansists forbade barbers and made all men grow beards to be like Muhammed?

lol. Yes. On this one I'll speak for just about every Protestant out there. No Protestant denomination I've ever heard instructs its members to bow or pray to the Bible.

If you find one, be sure to let us know.

That’s absurd. Are you really thinking that there is a coordinated cabal of Catholics designing strategies on a BBS website that we read when, in my case, I rest between tasks and running around?

Come on, the folks ahve found out the troof about the great Calf-lick conspiracy. They know about our secret handshakes and how we dance the hokey-cokey. They also know that we're actually thetans from the planet Makooozakoosiwawa. Absurd? Well, people who want to believe that the Church is one big Conspiracy theory, will keep believing it, no matter what.

The RM can restore or not restore the post. I think it was pretty general, actually.

I said that your catholic pings dating back to 2005, a posting history that only goes back to 2005, a lack of protestant posts or pings, a relatively young age in 2005, and a recent claim of a conversion makes it possible to question the credibility of the claims.

Now, we all know that God knows, but if this is some effort to give the RC’s a coup in their discussions with the Prot’s, then the credibility question negates its effectiveness.

I think I also allowed that any prot posts on the part of US7 would certainly mitigate.

as a life long practicing Catholic I say Welcome!!!

as a practicing Catholic who realizes at times people and elders within the faith believe more in the teachings of the church than the teachings of Jesus I say pray daily and ask God to show you the way rather than any book...

I think we should get Pope Benedict to join Doc Eek and Xena warrior princess’ classes on Calf-licks. They will teach us Cathechism and what the Church actually teaches about cats and chocolate milk shakes (you see, THAT is why we are called CAT-licks, why Easter is suspiciously like Eostre and why all of this was created by Pope Kermit the Grape in the 4th century just after Pope Constantine the Emperor

REally? What about the Western Branch of American Reform Prebylutheranism?

Well, this isn't a court, of course, but reasonable doubts of innocence, if there were any, would not be grounds to convict.

And i have yet to see how being open to what's going on among RC's and having RC friends whose opinions on various matters of religion one seeks would constitute reasonable doubt that someone has subsequently decided to convert.

I've said before the Protestantism seems sometimes to exhibit a discomfort with nuance. This seems to be an example. I guy is thinking about the Catholic Church for a while, a long while, and has friends in it, and has conversations with those friends, so he must already be Catholic?

I have Protestant friends and I consult them on matters of religion. Does that cast reasonable doubt on my being Catholic?

1) He was 16 in 2005, and as his homeschooling father, I taught him how to enter the fray of FreeRepublic.

2) He said he was going to start going NEXT MONTH. It is in the title of this topic (containing 1000+ posts). He goes to college year-round, full-time and works on the weekends. He had to clear his work schedule to make allowances for it, and it had to wait. In the meantime, he asked for information. That is all.

If you knew him you would be embarrased for your statements. The Lord knows him, and that is all he needs.

I sent you a link for his website. You can learn everything you want to know about his character from that website.

What’s with this conspiracy talk?

Stop talking about deleted posts. That is "picking at the scab."

And stop being indignant that Freepers of a common belief caucus privately or publicly to organize their response. It is to be expected on a Religion Forum.

Plagiarized joke alert!

You heard about the time a Jesuit and a Dominican were arguing about which order was greater?

Finally they decided to ask God to give them a sign to help them settle the issue. A pirec of paper floated down from the sky. On it was written:

My Dear Children,
It is not my will that you should disagree about such trivial things. You should direct all our efforts toward spreading the Gospel and ministering to those in need. Please end these foolish rivalries,
Yours faithfully in Me,

God, O.P.

Credibility question, Mad Dawg. It opens the post to question.

Like already mentioned, any protestant pings or posts would certainly mitigate in favor of US7. In the meantime, it’s reasonable to have doubts.

But, but, I LIKE picking at scabs.

Seriously, I posted one of my replies or attempted rebuttals before I knew that the post was lifted and the other before I read your earlier injunction.

As his father, are you a Roman Catholic?

If you wanted a caucus or ecumenic thread, you should have labeled this as such. Since it's an open thread and you solicited opinions, you got them. Good luck as you venture toward Rome.

This is the second person I've seen you recruit for the Catholic Church.
