Why so many LDS threads?
08-May-2008 | Grig

Posted on 05/08/2008 5:04:47 PM PDT by Grig

I am posting this on behalf of many LDS freepers. They will post their own 'signature' to this in the comments below. --- Some of you have noticed lately a lot of LDS (ie: Mormon) threads here on FR. I'm going to tell you why.

For many years there have been several active LDS freepers here. We post to all the forums on relevant issues, and were happy to have a site where conservative values were so openly welcomed.

Those conservative values include faith in God, and freedom of religion. We fully respect the rights of all posters to express their opinions and views on religious matters, even when people choose to use those rights to express criticism of our own faith. We also support the ideas embodied in FR rules against religion bashing. There is no need for hostility and there should be no room for bigotry on FR. Every religion has it's miracles and mysteries. Every faith has things in it that are not or can not be proven, and things that run contrary to what secular science would have us believe. Someone mature and confident in their own faith generally doesn't feel the need to belittle the faith of others.

We have, to the best of our ability, conducted ourselves with civility and dignity. We do not feel that that respect has been returned by some posters (putting it mildly).

When Mormon missionaries were murdered, the moderators were kept busy pulling jubilant posts off the thread. When Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home, we contended for months with posters who appeared to be motivated by religious bigotry doing all they could to smear the family and accuse the father. Several posters openly admitted their religious motivation in opposing Mitt Romney and confessed that no matter how conservative any Mormon was, they would never vote for one for President of the USA. When the Pope died, I don't think any Mormon poster posted anything unkind, yet the thread about the passing of our President recently needed many comments removed.

Nearly every thread having any connection with Mormons, or Utah winds up being hijacked by anti-Mormon activists who copy and paste the same false accusations over and over even when it has been clearly and factually pointed out to them on multiple occasions that they are bearing false witness against our faith. Everything possible is done by these activists to make FR a hostile place for Mormons, and for at least some of them, bashing Mormonism is all they do here. Their most recent project is trying to blur the fact that the polygamous FLDS is a separate and distinct religion from ours, just as Lutherans are a separate and distinct religion from Catholicism.

In our opinion, such poster do a great disservice to FR and to their fellow freepers by spreading disinformation and promoting hostility towards a people known for walking the walk of conservative values.

Why the moderators here don't see the behavior of these anti-Mormon activists as religion bashing is a mystery to us, but it is the moderators call to make and we respect their right to do so. That doesn't mean we have to be passive however. We have all spent many hours refuting the accusations leveled at our faith, but these wind up buried deep in a flood of comments, effectively shouting us down.

Recently some of us have decided to take a more proactive approach. Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down. We will actively define our faith here rather than just respond to accusations.

So expect to see lots of Mormon threads, now and for as long as we see fit to keep posting them (although probably not as many as there are Catholic threads). They will be about our basic doctrines and responses to common accusations. If you want to know what our faith is about, read the articles we post. We will post them as open threads and I encourage you to compare the difference in tone and spirit between what we post and what our critics say.

Commonality that ties all Christians together is Jesus Christ. We don’t repeat the creeds, but we certainly do love and worship the Lord Jesus Christ.

LOL!
I kept trying the Mormon Name thingy until I got one that made me laugh!

I’m glad you like my page! I didn’t want to fill it with URLs and quotes because it wouldn’t be fun to visit. And I wouldn’t like it if it wasn’t fun!

I’ve lost the piccie for the pirate, but it was fun, too! Maybe I can get it back when I revise the page. Some day....

I am not ex-jewish. If I were, and my experience showed that Jadiaism was a cult, and I had found salvation in Christ, then certainly I would speak out against it.

As it stands, I am a sixth generation Mormon on both sides, who has found salvation through the atonement of Christ alone.

I like to tell people how I came to find Him. The story begins with me leaving behind my belief that Temple covenants, ordinances, works, and my perfection would earn it for me. Do you wish me to be quiet so others will never hear my story?

Other than getting irritated when they insist upon calling themselves “christian” I hold them no ill will and was planning to vote for Mitt before he dropped out leaving us with....well what we’re left with.

>>especially when they announce themselves as Catholic and then proceed to defend the Mormon church.<<

Are you talking about me?
I never defended the Mormon Church. I defended the right of every person to believe the way they want.

That is why you won’t get a Catholic to have “street courage”. We don’t believe in it or rather got over it. Now we defend ourselves. The Mormons don’t effect my Church at all, neither does yours (unless you sent the stupid handholding to my mass), and therefore I’m not going to say you are condemned, nor any Mormon. Our Lord decides that, neither one of us.

No! Actually, personal stories are a wonderful way to convince someone of your beliefs! No one can argue with them.

Constantly bantering and demanding answers don’t seem to work here.

You've been addressed more than once on this try at dissembling scripture to support your cultish beliefs. The following scripture is spoken by Jesus TO JEWS and refers to the gentiles He will be bringing into the kingdom in the Church Age, as Paul and even James related! ...

John 10: 16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Your effort to take that passage and twist it to be the justification for the fraud Smith tried to perpetrate with the imaginary Hebrews populating the Americas is even contrary to your own religious teachings since you claim the Nephites and Lamanites to be descended from Abraham and thus not 'other sheep' to be brought into one fold ... thus the gentile world is an 'other' group of His sheep to be brought into the fold derived from Abraham and now 'descended from Abraham by The Spirit. Nice try though ...

I would say that all of your efforts on this thread have served the Mormon religion and none of it has served Christianity or the Catholic church.

The scariest thing in the world is my Mormon name is the same as my Mormon given name that I received at my “blessing,” my father gave me when I was one year old and carried until the day I got married.

It has NOTINHG to do with religion.

Oh. Thanks for letting me know then.

I suspect The reference to pigs was an example only, and nothing personal. He could have used a horse, a sheep, a bunny, a cat, a dog....

HA! Suuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeee.

Got any swamp land to sell me also?

The pig reference was meant to be derogatory, and you know it. The fact is he didn't use a bunny rabbit, or cat analogy.

In fact, he even verbalized that the said "pigs" (us Christians) were dirty and need to be cleaned.

Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down.

You can stop digging yourself a deeper hole now.

No, they’re probably full of love by trying to minister to Mormons. Victims always think they’re being bashed by haters and that’s not true. Sometimes they are trying to speak truth to people and it’s not wanted or accepted. So they’re called haters instead. Sigh.

That’s your opinion and you have a right to it. However, I will take the opinion of a very wise man over yours...

I’m not a member of the LDS (although about half my family are) and I support your statement.

I have also noticed that LDS matters are often met with contempt and derogatory humor. Similar types of issues concerning Methodists, Baptists, Orthodox, etc., don’t seem to elicit the same level of interest or the same types of comments.

While there may never be a theological meeting of the minds between the LDS and others, the average LDS member is strongly conservative and shares our American values.

I think it’s a good idea to share the facts about the LDS when it’s appropriate.

I learned a long time ago that people act and REact the way they want to. If you want to feel it was personal, you will. I don’t take your comments personally because I don’t want to waste my time with that kind of emotion.

You can say anything about me and my home page you want to, and it won’t make any of it true, nor will it make me respond in kind, simply because that’s not who I am. If you want to take offense at something, have at it. :o])
